iSwipe Brings Swype Keyboard to Jailbroken iOS Devices

The Swype keyboard allows users to input text by sliding their finger across the keyboard, hitting the letters in the order that they're in the word. Software is used to guess what word the user intended on typing, and pops it into the text. Until recently, it's only been available to Android devices, however, if you have a jailbroken iOS device, you can install it right now.

iSwipe is beta software, and free of charge. You'll have to add the developer's repository to Cydia, but once you do, you can download it.

I found that it works well, allowing you to choose from a list of suggestions, while automatically choosing the top selection. However, I found I was able to type a lot faster with normal typing. I'd often have to fix mistakes with the keyboard. I stopped using it, and eventually uninstalled it.

This isn't the fault of the developer. In fact, his implementation of Swype looks like the original, and works well. I just don't believe that swiping your finger over the keyboard is going to be the best mode of input for everyone. But, to each his or her own, so why not try it for yourself?

To install it, you'll need a jailbroken iPhone. Go into Cydia, and add his repository under sources: http://wynd.x10.mx. Once you add the developer's repository, you can install iSwipe by searching for it. Happy swiping.

iOS 4.3.4 Released

Today, Apple released the update to iOS that fixes a PDF vulnerability. The patch closes the security hole that Jailbreakme.com used. Fortunately, no one else was able to come up with an exploit before Apple could patch the security issue.

If you jailbroke your phone, you'll want to hold off on this update, as it could remove your jailbreak, and you'll lose your jailbreak apps and customizations. But, as long as you've installed the PDF patcher from Cydia, you're already protected, so there's no rush.

JailbreakMe Causing Issues With Camera Connection Kit

JailbreakMe.com makes it easy to jailbreak your iOS device. But it seems that it could be causing problems for those using the iPad Camera Connection Kit. Comex, the developer behind JailbreakMe says he's working on a fix, which will be released through Cydia. He has admitted that he hasn't gotten it to work for the iPad 2 yet, but he's still working on a fix.

Apple is also working to fix the PDF issue that enables JailbreakMe.com. There are other ways to jailbreak an iOS device, but nothing beats the ease of JailbreakMe. If the Camera Connection Kit isn't essential to you, you may want to take advantage of Jailbreakme, and wait for the update.

Apple is patching the PDF security flaw that Jailbreakme.com uses to jailbreak your iOS device. This isn't solely to block the jailbreak. If a hacker were to use this security flaw, he or she could potentially take contact information, and even passwords. After finding out about this exploit, Apple quickly got to work on patching it. Expect the patch to be released shortly, possibly as soon as next week. 

If you have already jailbroken your iOS device, remember to install PDF Patcher 2, from Cydia. This will protect you from the hack.

A while back, it was possible to jailbreak your iOS device through Safari. All a user had to do was go to JailbreakMe.com and tap install. Today, that became a possibility once again, and it's never been easier. In fact, I just jailbroke my iPhone a few minutes ago. It took less than a minute.

If you're considering jailbreaking your iOS device, make sure you back up first. All you have to do is sync your iOS device, and it will back up. After you do that, just go to Jailbreakme.com, click the "free" button, and then install (just like installing an iOS app), and you're finished. 

The first thing you'll want to do is install the PDFpatcher application. This protects your iPhone from the vulnerability used to do the jailbreak. Yes, jailbreaking actually will make your iOS device more secure in this situation, but it does have a huge drawback. You still have to be more careful about the apps you install, since they weren't approved by Apple, and could be malicious. You can protect yourself by only installing applications that you have seen in use elsewhere. In this sense, jailbreaking makes your iOS device almost as insecure as Android. This is the main drawback of jailbreaking. However, to do this, you'd have to add an untrusted source yourself, which, for the average user, would be too difficult, making it an unheard of situation.

Jailbreak apps aren't deleted the same way normal ones are, you have to do it with the Cydia app you'll get when you jailbreak. Jailbreaking your phone is easier to do, but keeping your iOS device secure and working the way you want it to is just as difficult as ever. It's not too hard, but there is a learning curve. You'll also have to be careful of what you install. But if the additional features are worth it to you, jailbreaking has never been easier. Check it out if you think you're up to it.
