Refashion with glitter sheets

Transfer any plain top into something fun! 

Supplies:

Knit top to embellish

 Tulip® Fashion Glitter™ Shimmer Transfer Sheets (I used a silver and gold sheet)

Scissors

Iron

and because we all love a good before and after -

Step 1: Cut strips out of the gold and silver sheets starting at 1" wide going down to 1/4" wide. Pull the plastic cover off the top and the cut the strips into squares. Pulling the plastic cover off before you cut it into squares just saves you from peeling it off after you have a ton of cut pieces!

Step 2: Lay your knit top flat and place the squares starting at the top (neckline) with the biggest squares. Mix the gold and silver together and place them on all different angles sort of a in a "messy" pattern. The idea is for it to look like it's falling and getting smaller as it goes. I also placed mine in an upside down sort of triangle shape.

Continue placing the the squares on the top adding the smaller and small squares the further down you go. (if you find you need more of one size just cut additional squares)

Step 3: Adhere the squares to the knit top as directed on the packaging with a hot iron. 

And you are done! Dress it up or wear it casual! I love the mix of gold and silver! It give me lots of option for jewelry and creating a different look each time I wear it!

Sweater Leg warmers - tutorial

Remember my sweater pillows? I said to keep the extra pieces for other projects....here is one of those projects! 

Supplies:

Sweater (I used a heavy cable knit one)

Scissors or rotary cutter/ruler/mat

sewing machine

Buttons (optional)

sewing needle and thread (optional)

Step 1: Lay out your sweater flat and cut off the arms of the sweater as close to the shoulder hem as you can. 

Step 2: Fold over the top raw edge about 1/2" and pin. Then sew to create a finished top edge. 

Step 3: optional - Handsew buttons down the length of 1 side. 

Step 4: Slip on over your boots or skinny jeans and fold under the top edge as needed or desired!

what I learned: Cable knit sweaters don't "give much or have much elasticity. It's better to choose a sweater that has some give to it.

Swing top to Girls Dress - refashion tutorial

I love a good before and after transformation so let's start with that! :) 

From a woman's swing top to..

A fun girl sized dress!!

Supplies:

Woman's sized swing top

child sized t-shirt

rotary cutter, ruler and mat

straight pins

sewing machine

Step 1: Cut the bottom of the t-shirt off to the desired length. I measured on my daugther where I wanted the waist of the dress to fall or hit on her torso. I ended up cutting off about 3 1/2".

Step 2: Cut the swing top just below the arm holes. Set the extra knit scraps from both tops aside.

Step 3: Turn the swing top inside out and place it over the t-shirt lining up the cut bottom edges. Pin the 2 edges together and sew.

Step 4: Turn right side out again and you can see the dress has taken shape! Now it's time to embellish the top. Take the extra knit and or embellishments from the swing top to use (I used a seam ripper to detatch this rosette embellishment).

Step 5: Take the largest part of the swing top scraps and cut a half circle type-ish shape to create a bib on the top. 

Cut to fit the neckline of the t-shirt. Pin into place and sew on. 

 

Add extra embellishments if desired and wear!

Girls TEEzer Skirt - refashion tutorial

 It's another refashion project that's great for your little girl of all ages and sizes!
 You can whip up this "TEE"zer skirt in no time! It's comfortable, original and eye catching! She will love it and so will her friends!

Supplies:

1 t-shirt

scissors

measuring tape

sewing machine

elastic

nylon chiffon or tulle

Step 1: Cut the t-shirt just under the sleeves. Determine the length you want the knit part of the skirt to be (from waist to just below bum) and add 1 inch for the casing. Measure and cut the t-shirt to that measurement. (My measurement was 10.5 inches)

Step 2:  Cut your chiffon or tulle in long strips so you can gather it a bit. I like create this skirt with 2 layers of chiffon or tulle. (I cut mine to be 8" high by whatever length I had on hand). The great thing about chiffon and tulle is you can slightly overlap the materials or "snug" them up close together when 1 strip runs out to create a continuous look.

Step 3: Gather the fabric but running a basting stitch along the top of the strip. Do NOT back stitch at either end. Pull the thread from the underside of the fabric to gather or ruffle it. You can gather it a bit or a lot depending on the look you want how much material you are working with.

Step 4: Place the fabric 1" up from the bottom of the skirt piece. Pin into place all the way around. Using a straight or zig zag stitch sew the ruffled fabric to the skirt piece sewing over the stitching line creating from ruffling it.

Step 5: Fold the top edge of the skirt piece over 1" and pin to create a casing for the elastic to go through. Sew the casing leaving about a 2 - 3" opening. Thread your elastic through, sew the ends of the elastic together and then sew the opening closed. 

The skirt is done! It is meant to be worn with leggings underneath it. Just a fun pop of color in a lightweight, flouncy, girlie skirt!

Stenciled Pencil Skirt tutorial - with Martha Stewart paints/tools

About a week ago I received a box full of paints and tools from the new Martha Stewart Crafts Decorative Paint line exclusively by Plaid Crafts. Martha has done it yet again!

These paints are formulated to work on all crafting surfaces including wood, metal, glass, ceramic, terra-cotta and fabric. And with 160 paint colors in five finishes (Satin, High Gloss, Glitter, Pearl, Metallic), the skies the limit on what you can create!

She's got tools for ALL sorts of projects and the smartest bottles, tips and applicators to make your project a success!  


I bought this skirt for $1.00 two years ago (or more) and have never worn it. I wasn't completely in love with it then but thought I could make it work for a buck. Well - I am glad I hung on to this skirt. It was perfect for this project. I took it from plain to POW!!! At least I think so and I totally love it now!

Supplies:

Straight fitting skirt

Tintable fabric medium (Martha Stewart)

Satin Acrylic Craft paint (color of choice)

Stencil brush set (Martha Stewart)

Cathedral lace stencil set (Martha Stewart)

Cardboard or thick paper 

Step 1. Choose the lace pattern you like best from the stencil set (I chose the large and small lace doily looking stencils).  Put the cardboard or thick paper between the front and back layers of the skirt. This will keep any paint from seeping to the other side.

Step 2. Mix your Satin Acrylic paint with the fabric medium according to the proportions listed on the bottle.

Step 3. Place your stencil onto the skirt and tape into place. I placed mine near the bottom hem and placed it slightly off the edge to make the design tail off the hemline.

Step 4. Dab your stencil brush into your paint mixture and then dab off the extras. If you are unsure of the technique, the Martha Stewart stencils come with instructions for prepping your surface, planning your design, painting the stencil, clean up and additional ideas and techniques.

Step 5. With short, strong up and down motions, fill in your stencil with the paint mixture.

Step 6. Pull up the stencil and move to the next part of your skirt, retape and repeat the process. Add the smaller doily stencil in between the larger ones for a varied design. Extend the design around the sides and on the back of the skirt as well.

Step 7. Let dry for 24 hours and then heat seal as directed on the Fabric Medium bottle.

WEAR IT!

make a statement coming and going!
