Refashion with glitter sheets

Diposting oleh fawaid on Selasa, 13 Desember 2011

Transfer any plain top into something fun!

Supplies:
Knit top to embellish
Scissors
Iron

and because we all love a good before and after -

Step 1: Cut strips out of the gold and silver sheets starting at 1" wide going down to 1/4" wide. Pull the plastic cover off the top and the cut the strips into squares. Pulling the plastic cover off before you cut it into squares just saves you from peeling it off after you have a ton of cut pieces!

Step 2: Lay your knit top flat and place the squares starting at the top (neckline) with the biggest squares. Mix the gold and silver together and place them on all different angles sort of a in a "messy" pattern. The idea is for it to look like it's falling and getting smaller as it goes. I also placed mine in an upside down sort of triangle shape.

Continue placing the the squares on the top adding the smaller and small squares the further down you go. (if you find you need more of one size just cut additional squares)

Step 3: Adhere the squares to the knit top as directed on the packaging with a hot iron.

And you are done! Dress it up or wear it casual! I love the mix of gold and silver! It give me lots of option for jewelry and creating a different look each time I wear it!

Refashion a polo - with guest Mama Says Sew

Diposting oleh fawaid on Jumat, 19 Agustus 2011

Hey there, Brassy Apple readers! I'm Terra from mama says sew. I'm so excited to be here for Back to "COOL"!

I love a good deal.  Sometimes that backfires on me though.  I picked up this blue polo shirt new for 50 cents.  After a few washes, I saw why it was so cheap.  It shrunk in length but not width.  It sat in the "to get rid of" pile until I came up with an idea to save it.

I picked up a bright yellow and white striped long sleeve tee for a quarter. Not really a flattering color for me, but perfect for my little guy.

I used the shirt to add some length to the polo, and then for good measure, added long sleeves to make it nice and cozy for fall.  Perfect for a new back to school outfit!

Want to save some of your clothing discards?  I'll show you how!

Start by cutting the sleeves of the long sleeve shirt to the length you want.  I measured using a long sleeve shirt of my son's that fits him well.

Lay your polo shirt over the top of the other shirt to measure how much extra length you need. Don't forget to add extra if you have openings in the sides of your shirt like this one does.

I needed to trim the undershirt a little so it would be the same width as the polo.  You may also need to do this for the sleeves.  If you do, just turn it right sides together and sew it back up after trimming.

Pin the undershirt to your polo all the way around.

Use thread that matches your polo and stitch along the polo's hemline to attach the undershirt.  Make sure to go up and around notches in the polo if you have them.

Then just keep stitching all the way around.

Turn your shirt inside out and trim the extra fabric of the undershirt close to the stitching.

Then pin the sleeves of the undershirt inside the sleeves of your polo.  I found the easiest way to do this was to stick my hand up through the long sleeve and pin that way. It helped to keep the front of the sleeve from being pinned to the back.

Roll up the long sleeve so that you can stitch the sleeve of the undershirt on the same way you stitched the bottom on.

And that's it! Now you have a shirt that is perfect for starting school.  Or playing outside.  Who needs a backpack anyway?

See ya later! You're welcome to come visit us anytime!

DIY Maxi Skirt

Diposting oleh fawaid on Kamis, 14 Juli 2011

One of my favorite things to do is re-fashion! I love taking something I already have and making it better!
Maxi skirts are all the rage this season so I created one for my daughter with a few simple steps! You can make one too!

Materials:
2 t-shirts similar in size (I used 2 medium sized shirts that were in the donate pile)
Scissors and/or rotary cutter, ruler and mat
Straight pins
Sewing machine
3/8" wide elastic

Step 1: Cut across the shirts right under the sleeves. Cut the bottom hem off of only 1 shirt. Set the extra pieces aside.

Step 2: Cut the remaining body pieces of the 2 shirts in half.

Step 3: Layout your design/pattern alternating the 2 shirts. Position the piece with the bottom hemline still attached at the very bottom.

Step 4:Take your top 2 pieces and turn the 2nd piece inside out. Place it inside out over the 1st top piece (1st photo) lining up the bottom edges (2nd photo). Pin the 2 layers together and sew (3rd photo).

The nice thing about knit is it stretches. If one of the pieces is a bit wider than another, simply pull it a bit to match up and pinning and sewing.

Step 5: Unfold the 2nd layer down when sewn. Repeat this process with the remaining 2 layers (place 3rd piece inside out over the 2nd piece, line up the bottom edges, pin and sew) ending with the piece that is still has the hemline attached.

Step 6: Fold under the top edge 1" to create a casing and sew closed leaving about a 2" opening.

Measure waist and subtract 1". Cut elastic. Thread it through the casing using a safety pin on the end.

Overlap the ends about 1/2" and sew. Then sew the casing opening closed and WEAR!!!

I will be linking up here at these fabulous parties!

The Craf "TEE" tote........tutorial

Diposting oleh fawaid on Rabu, 08 Juni 2011

The craf"tee" tote
 - a total DIY refashioned/upcycled handbag -
(can me made with any size tee or hoops. But here's the measurements and sizes I used)

Supplies:
1 t-shirt for the handbag (used yellow youth tee size 10-12)
1 Embroidery hoop set (2 rings) mine where about 9" - handles
Ribbon (5 1/4 yards)
glue gun
scissors
sewing machine
2 large grommets
hammer
misc embellishments - buttons, zippers, fabric, tshirt scraps, etc.

Step 1: Turn the tshirt you are using for the main handbag inside out and lay flat. Fold in half lengthwise. Round the bottom by cutting only the bottom hemline about about 5 inches up the side.

Cut a diagonal line few inches under the arm to the middle of the tshirt. Open and lay flat.

My shirt ending up measuring about 17.5 inches from top point to bottom. Turn right side out.

Step 2: Embellish! Cut out shapes from fabric lay out in a design you like, pin and sew. Add ruffles, rosettes, buttons, sequins, etc.

Step 3: Once it is embellished turn right side out. Pin the bottom edge rounded edge together and sew closed with your sewing machine.

Step 4: Handles - Wrap each embroidery hoop with wide ribbon. Use hot glue to secure the end and wrap tightly overlapping the ribbon. Every few inches add another drop of hot glue to keep the ribbon in place and from unraveling.

Step 5: Attaching the handles - Lay out the purse and fold back the top. Place the handle so there is about 3 1/2 - 4" from the handle to the top point.

Add a small running bead of hot glue to the handle and fold the fabric over it.This will help the fabric from bunching up to tightly and keep it spread out wide. Repeat on the opposite side with the other handle.

Step 6: Finishing - To keep the folded triangle piece around the handle in place and add some extra design interest, add a large grommet to the center under each handle.

and you are done! My total cost was $3.75!

If you make one share a photo in the Brassy Apple Flickr Group! I'd love to see!
