Mod Podged 2nd hand find

Diposting oleh fawaid on Jumat, 02 Maret 2012

It's not just clothes that scream at me to be refashioned but furniture and odds and ends do to!

A little Mod podge, decorative paper napkins and a second hand store find and I created this:

Supplies:
Statue, vase, decorative piece to makeover
Decorative paper napkins
Mod podge
Brush
scissors

Step 1: I loved the shape of the piece I found but it looked off. Then I noticed it was broken on the top.

So before I bought it I searched for a piece to add to the top of it to balance it out. I found a wooden egg shape and it was perfect! A little glue (and dry time) and my I had a new shape to makeover!

Step 2: Unfold a napkin and apply a layer of Mod Podge to a medium sized area. Lay the napkin on top of the Mod Podge and start to smooth out and mold it to the under lying shape.

Continue the process until the entire thing is covered.

Step 3: Apply a layer of Mod Podge over the top to adhere the napkin well and to seal it. Smooth out with your fingers. I loved the folds, wrinkles and texture the napkin made. I did NOT try to make it perfectly smooth - you won't get it to do that with a napkin.

Also - if your napkin tears just cut or rip a piece of napkin and apply over the top. The design on mine made it easy to add layers and over lap without it being obvious.

Let it dry, place it and enjoy it! This entire project cost me UNDER $5.00! So next time you are thrifting or yard saleing, try to see the shape of the object and how it could be transformed!

Pendant Necklace - tutorial

Diposting oleh fawaid on Selasa, 14 Juni 2011

Tick tock....tick tock....did you know you can make a necklace from a clock?
ha ha! Well I did. And as the host Brooke, from the TV show Studio 5 said, I am "ticking".

This tutorial goes to show that you can create MANY things from unepxected items! Maybe you will see some items differently now and this may spark some creativity of your own!

Supplies:
Pendant from a clock
fabric
scissors
fabric marker or pencil
Diamond Glaze
Bail
E6000 - craft glue
Chain

step 1:Take your Pendant and pull out the parts so just the round part is left. Place it face down on the wrong side of the fabric. Trace and cut.

Step 2:  Apply Mod Podge to the pendant and place the fabric on top. Apply a layer over the fabric as well. Smooth out all the air bubbles and make sure all the edges are sealed down.

Step 3: Apply a generous layer of Diamond Glaze over the fabric. Let dry. If needed, apply another layer. This will create a "glass like" effect over the top.

Step 4: Attach your Bail with E6000 glue to the back. Let dry and thread a chain through to wear!

I will be linking up HERE throughout the week!

The Craf "TEE" tote........tutorial

Diposting oleh fawaid on Rabu, 08 Juni 2011

The craf"tee" tote
 - a total DIY refashioned/upcycled handbag -
(can me made with any size tee or hoops. But here's the measurements and sizes I used)

Supplies:
1 t-shirt for the handbag (used yellow youth tee size 10-12)
1 Embroidery hoop set (2 rings) mine where about 9" - handles
Ribbon (5 1/4 yards)
glue gun
scissors
sewing machine
2 large grommets
hammer
misc embellishments - buttons, zippers, fabric, tshirt scraps, etc.

Step 1: Turn the tshirt you are using for the main handbag inside out and lay flat. Fold in half lengthwise. Round the bottom by cutting only the bottom hemline about about 5 inches up the side.

Cut a diagonal line few inches under the arm to the middle of the tshirt. Open and lay flat.

My shirt ending up measuring about 17.5 inches from top point to bottom. Turn right side out.

Step 2: Embellish! Cut out shapes from fabric lay out in a design you like, pin and sew. Add ruffles, rosettes, buttons, sequins, etc.

Step 3: Once it is embellished turn right side out. Pin the bottom edge rounded edge together and sew closed with your sewing machine.

Step 4: Handles - Wrap each embroidery hoop with wide ribbon. Use hot glue to secure the end and wrap tightly overlapping the ribbon. Every few inches add another drop of hot glue to keep the ribbon in place and from unraveling.

Step 5: Attaching the handles - Lay out the purse and fold back the top. Place the handle so there is about 3 1/2 - 4" from the handle to the top point.

Add a small running bead of hot glue to the handle and fold the fabric over it.This will help the fabric from bunching up to tightly and keep it spread out wide. Repeat on the opposite side with the other handle.

Step 6: Finishing - To keep the folded triangle piece around the handle in place and add some extra design interest, add a large grommet to the center under each handle.

and you are done! My total cost was $3.75!

If you make one share a photo in the Brassy Apple Flickr Group! I'd love to see!

Refashion - girls shrug tutorial

Diposting oleh fawaid on Minggu, 21 November 2010

I first shared this project on Ucreate BUT if you didn't catch it there, here's your second chance.
I totally LOVE how easy this is and how stinkin' cute it can be!

*and now that the weather has turned colder (at least here), this is easily created with a long sleeved tee instead of a short sleeved tee!

As always - I want to see how you got our craft on with my tutorial! Please upload and share your photos HERE

Girls rosette shrug

 Materials needed:
T-shirt (long or short sleeved)
Scissors
Fabric Marker (optional)
Measuring Tape
Needle & thread

Step 1: Lay the tshirt flat. Cut up the center of the front only cutting through the top layer.

Step 2: Measure 3" in from the center line you just cut, 2" down from the bottom of the arm sleeve and 1" in from the center line at the bottom hem. Connect from the markings to create lines as shown below.

Repeat measurements and markings on the other side.
Step 4: Cut through both layers along the vertical diagonal line and across. Repeat on the other side. The tshirt should then look like this:

Step 5: Turn the tshirt over and cut a straight line across the back layer matching it up with the sides that are cut.

Step 6: Turn the tshirt back over to the front. Draw a diagonal line from the edge of the neckline to the center or middle about where the back hemline has been cut. See picture below.

Repeat the opposite side. Cut along the line and around the back of the neckline hem. The basic shape of the shrug has now been created!

Step 7: Embellish!!! Using the extra tshirt fabric that was cut away, embellish the shrug by creating rosettes, layered flowers, etc. Handstitch onto the shrug in any pattern/design/quantity you like!

Slip it on  your little cutie, tie it on the front and wear it out! (this design can easily be made in any size! Just increase the length of the measurement under the arm from step 2 as needed)

and if there are any scraps left over, why not create a matching hair accessory?

Brassy Ruffle Top tutorial

Diposting oleh fawaid on Selasa, 14 September 2010

If you are itching to get sewing again and looking for another refashion project......well I have got something for you! I recently shared this tutorial on the Tatertots and Jello Blog. If you missed it the first time around, here's your chance.

Brassy Ruffle Top

Materials:
2 matching T-shirts (1 needs to be your size)
scissors
measuring tape
thread
sewing machine
optional: rotary cutter, mat and ruler

Step 1: Rounded Neck line - cut out the neck hole
V-neck - Leave the neck alone

Step 2: Leave the sleeves on or cut them at an angle for cap sleeves (1st photo) or cut them all the way off (2nd photo) for a sleeveless look following the diagrams below

Step 3: Using your scissors, cut up the middle of the top layer of the t-shirt.

Step 4: Fold back and under the neckline so the point is in the middle of your chest or lower if you want a deeper V. Taper from the middle point up each side through the neckline.

Pin into place. Repeat on the opposite side. Sew  and trim the excess fabric from the underside. Set aside.

Step 5: Creating the ruffles - Take the 2nd t-shirt and square off the bottom hemline if necessary. Cut three 5" wide strips (1st photo). Cut each piece at the side seams creating 2 separate pieces (2nd photo).

Cut a 1/2" wide strip. Cut at the side seams creating 2 pieces the same length. Gently pull on each end to make the knit roll into a "tube". These will the front ties.

Step 6: Using a basting stitch - sew along the top edge of each strip. Do not backstitch at either end.

Step 7: Gently pulling the thread from the underside of the strip, gather or ruffle each strip.

Step 8: Lay out your t-shirt flat working on one side of the front. Starting at the bottom, place a ruffled strip matching it up with the bottom hemline. Adjust the ruffle to fit between the side seam and the inside cut edge. Pin in place

Step 9: Place 2nd ruffled strip above the 1st and overlap bottom of the ruffle 1/4 - 1/2" to the top of the 1st ruffle. Pin and repeat with the 3rd strip. Follow the same steps to place the ruffled strips on the opposide side.

Step 10: Place 1 end of the 1 of the ties at the inside edge of the top 3rd ruffled strip. Pin.

Step 11: Stitch each ruffled layer into place by using a straight or zig zag stitch and sewing over the gathering thread line.

Step 12: Repeat on the other side. And you are done!!! Dress it up or down - just have fun wearing it!

*If you give this refashion a try strut your stuff and share a photo in the Brassy Apple Flickr Group! *
I will be sharing this project in several linky parties! check them out! :)
