Farmhouse Chic DIY decor

Diposting oleh fawaid on Rabu, 28 Maret 2012

The best thing about your own space - is just that. It's YOUR own space. We all have different styles and we get to create the mood, feeling, etc that we want for each room in our home.

My mom has recently gone for a Farmhouse Chic feel and I wanted to share some photos from her house I snapped to share! All these ideas can be replicated easily. Most importantly - love the space you are in! Surround yourself with items that matter to you, that you love, that resonate with you for whatever reason.

These vintage suitcases double as the weekly newspaper bin holder. The top suitcase belonged to my grandpa so it's sentimental and functional too. So much better than sitting a closet.

I love the look of a bare lampshade. And any "ugly" lampshade with the right structure underneath at a second hand store can be torn apart and made into this!

pssst...did you notice the red weather gate behind the table? Just a fun pop of color and texture!

Onto the Kitchen! White bead board paneling and a red trimmed out window makes it POP!

and how can you not notice this custom light over the sink! Love it!

She used the window space to display come great colored ceramics and these cheese graters that belonged to her mother.

An old rake head turned into a display for kitchen tools and makes them easy to access when they are needed instead of all piled in a drawer.

This is one of my favorite pieces! It's a mirrored closet door that she painted in this yummy mustard yellow and then attached the antique door hardware. It's just casually leaned against the wall in the living room. It reflects light beautifully and is such a large statement piece.

A brilliant solution  to a glass paneled door - cover the glass on the inside with fabric! Just use a little liquid starch to adhere it. This door leads into a walk in pantry so no matter how "messy" it may get you'll never see it. Plus I love the contrast of colors and pattern.

And one last detail to show you! She created a "cornice" board over her front window by using sliding shutter doors. They are interesting and add texture to the space.

Thanks for taking a tour with me through my Mom's Farmhouse Chic home! (pin it if you like it!)

Decor - Spring Spruce up!

Diposting oleh fawaid on Kamis, 08 Maret 2012

Don't you just LOVE Spring! I think it's because it brings color back into play after the winter season. I have shared before a bit of how I decorate my house for "winter" (here and here). So I thought I'd pop some pictures on here of my Spring Spruce up!
(plus don't you just love a peek into people's home? it's fun!)

Nothing grand but WOW it's makes a difference to me to change up and out a few things around my house. I love to add in different pops of color for different seasons - Play around with different textures that "go with" that season - and update and add in personal photos a couple times a year too.

Have you infused Spring into your home decor yet?

Mod Podged 2nd hand find

Diposting oleh fawaid on Jumat, 02 Maret 2012

It's not just clothes that scream at me to be refashioned but furniture and odds and ends do to!

A little Mod podge, decorative paper napkins and a second hand store find and I created this:

Supplies:
Statue, vase, decorative piece to makeover
Decorative paper napkins
Mod podge
Brush
scissors

Step 1: I loved the shape of the piece I found but it looked off. Then I noticed it was broken on the top.

So before I bought it I searched for a piece to add to the top of it to balance it out. I found a wooden egg shape and it was perfect! A little glue (and dry time) and my I had a new shape to makeover!

Step 2: Unfold a napkin and apply a layer of Mod Podge to a medium sized area. Lay the napkin on top of the Mod Podge and start to smooth out and mold it to the under lying shape.

Continue the process until the entire thing is covered.

Step 3: Apply a layer of Mod Podge over the top to adhere the napkin well and to seal it. Smooth out with your fingers. I loved the folds, wrinkles and texture the napkin made. I did NOT try to make it perfectly smooth - you won't get it to do that with a napkin.

Also - if your napkin tears just cut or rip a piece of napkin and apply over the top. The design on mine made it easy to add layers and over lap without it being obvious.

Let it dry, place it and enjoy it! This entire project cost me UNDER $5.00! So next time you are thrifting or yard saleing, try to see the shape of the object and how it could be transformed!

Needing to dress up your walls but don't want something permanent? or do you want something completely different that your neighbors and guests will notice and comment on when they stop by?

Well - maybe my fabric wall art tutorial is what you are looking for!

Take a look at what my little sister did in her house using a similar technique.

I have to start with this enormous one in the dining room!

Besides lovin' the dining room this birdie at the end of the hallway just make me smile! I love the modern "trees" and the colors.

A living room wall gets a pop of color and design!

And she's even added some fun in the bathroom!
(psst! she used my medallion pattern you can get here)

I always love to see how you create something from my tutorials! Please post and share photos on my Facebook wall, if you blog about it - send me the link, or email me!

Winter decor - dining room centerpiece

Diposting oleh fawaid on Selasa, 10 Januari 2012

Last week I shared some of my winter decor in my dining room and my SUGAR tip! Be sure to check out that if you missed it.  I couldn't finish off the dining room without a centerpiece for the table.

I took this "basket" which normally I use in the Fall but haven't for a about a year or two. It's just been sitting with my other decor stored away. As the new year turned over it was use it or donate it! SO - this FALL item got a winter makeover!

I gave it a light coating of white with some spray paint and let it dry. Then working in sections I sprayed small portions of the sides with a spray adhesive and while it was wet and tacky I sprinkled a mixture of Epsom salt with a bit of iridescent glitter in it.

This created a look of winter branches with a frosty/icy feel. Perfect for what I had already going on in the dining room!

I put a tall candle vase in the middle, filled the base with sugar and placed a tall white candle in the center. It's perfect! I love the crisp white feel it brings to the space after the reds/greens/golds, etc of Christmas. Plus you can never go wrong with candle light!

Winter decor & my SUGAR tip!

Diposting oleh fawaid on Kamis, 05 Januari 2012

Christmas comes down at my house the day after Christmas because I get excited to decorate for Winter. We go straight from Fall and Thanksgiving decor to Christmas. So January through March-ish I like to decorate for Winter. You can see how my living room was decorated for Winter last year HERE.

This year I thought I'd share some of my winter touches to my dining room. I love to decorate with whites, creams, silver, black and some natural elements for my winter decor (as you can see from my winter living room). So it's no surprise to see those same colors and feel in my dining room. Here's how I decorated the buffet.

One fun tip I have learned from the ladies in my neighborhood is that SUGAR makes a GREAT filler! It's inexpensive, it has a shimmer to it and it's white which goes with...well....everything!

I love to have a variety of clear containers for all sorts of occasions. For Winter, I have filled the bottoms of these 2 vases with sugar and added some sticks and branches to them (that natural element I love!).

(yes that is a saw and yes that I did cut the branches over my dining room table)

To this vase I added some decor balls...

I love that it sort of looks like snow.

I added some candles and these clear bubbles that sort of look like ice.

EASY ways to change up your decor this winter and make an impact in a small area!

How do you decorate for winter? If you try any of these tips, let me know! I love to see your spin on my ideas!

French Canvas Decor - DIY tutorial

Diposting oleh fawaid on Rabu, 30 Maret 2011

Hello! If you are stopping by from Good things Utah it's nice to see you!
See the TV segment HERE
It's time for the Spring Spruce up - and I am talking about your decor! I was inspired by some images on a couple different pillows I saw at Pottery Barn but knew I wanted this same feel on my wall instead of just a pillow and with my own twist on it. I created this "Spring-y", crisp version for my mantle! You can too!

French Canvas decor

Materials:
2 pack 16x20 ready made canvas (from Hobby Lobby)
Fabric transfer paper (images/printer)
iron
scissors
black sharpie marker (optional)

Print butterfly and bird images and french wording onto transfer paper following the manufacturers instructions on the packaging of the transfer paper. (remember to print the mirror image so the words won't be backwards when transferred)

Cut out the images and arrange on the canvas to find a layout you like.

Apply to the canvas following the manufacturers directions. Apply 1 section then layer the next on top until completed. Peel off the paper backing.

If you find you have an empty space and not enough printed wording, simply sketch out some words with a pencil copying others that have been used. Then go over it with marker.

and you are done!!!! I love how they turned out!

------------
I will be sharing this idea at these linky parties this week!
