Pendant Necklace - tutorial

Diposting oleh fawaid on Selasa, 14 Juni 2011

Tick tock....tick tock....did you know you can make a necklace from a clock?
ha ha! Well I did. And as the host Brooke, from the TV show Studio 5 said, I am "ticking".

This tutorial goes to show that you can create MANY things from unepxected items! Maybe you will see some items differently now and this may spark some creativity of your own!

Supplies:
Pendant from a clock
fabric
scissors
fabric marker or pencil
Diamond Glaze
Bail
E6000 - craft glue
Chain

step 1:Take your Pendant and pull out the parts so just the round part is left. Place it face down on the wrong side of the fabric. Trace and cut.

Step 2:  Apply Mod Podge to the pendant and place the fabric on top. Apply a layer over the fabric as well. Smooth out all the air bubbles and make sure all the edges are sealed down.

Step 3: Apply a generous layer of Diamond Glaze over the fabric. Let dry. If needed, apply another layer. This will create a "glass like" effect over the top.

Step 4: Attach your Bail with E6000 glue to the back. Let dry and thread a chain through to wear!

I will be linking up HERE throughout the week!

Egg-A-Labra - create your own!

Diposting oleh fawaid on Selasa, 05 April 2011

Studio 5 gave me a challenge and I took it! They gave me this inspiration picture and told me to run with it!

I've never really knocked anything off (that I can remember) and when I found out that the price was $150.00 dollars I wanted to create an EASY way to make something with a similar look and function!
(and I made mine for under $35.00!)

Here's the TV segment or following the step by step instructions with photos below!

Spring Egg-A-Labra
materials:
1 flower pot (used 6.5 wide at top by 5 inches high)
circle or square precut wooden piece
1 small condiment cup (plastic - found in kitchen aisle $0.80)
wooden dowel - 7/8" by 22 inches high
8 - 6" black scrolled plant bracket (home depot)
16 - 1/2" black screws
9 small glass candle cups (walmart $0.60)
drill/angle headed screwdriver
styrofoam (I used a 5x5" cube)
moss
strong craft glue
hot glue
White/cream paint
Black paint
Brown paint/stain/or ink
measuring tape

accessories - votive candles, easter eggs, flowers, small hanging picture hangers

Step 1: Assemble the base. I love the wooden fluted base and decided to create the same look very inexpensively. Glue the pot, condiment cup and wood base together. Let dry.

Paint white/cream or another color if desired. Let dry. Distress the base by sanding some of the edges. Rub with stain or watered down brown paint  or ink and wipe off excess. Let dry.

Step 2: Cut your dowel to be 22".  Paint the dowel black and let dry.

Step 3: Assembling the candle-abra piece. Mark 3 inches from the bottom of the dowel (this is how far you the dowel will go into the styrofoam once in the pot. From that mark I measured 9" up - make a mark. This is where the 1st row of  metal brackets will be placed. Then measure 7 inches up - make a mark. This is where the 2nd row of metal brackets will be placed.

Spacing 4 brackets evenly around the dowel, align the 1st one with the top of the mark. Drill into place. Place the other 3 so they make an X or CROSS when finished.

Repeat the same process for the 2nd row BUT offset the brackets so they line up in between the X or CROSS of the 1st row.

**if your screws didn't have a black head on them hit them with a bit of paint to blend in. Let dry.**

Step 4: Assembling the entire piece.Cut your styrofoam as necessary to fit inside your pot so it has a tight, snug fit. Add glue if necessary or desired. I also used my dowel to pre-punch (optional) a hole into the middle of the styrofoam block 3 inches down.

Inset the dowel or push it into the styrofoam and secure in place using glue. Ley dry.

Add moss around the bottom of the dowel covering the styrofoam completely. You can use whatever type/color of moss you like or add another material like shredded paper, etc.

Attach the 9 glass votive candle cups to the candle-abra with a strong, clear adhesive glue. Let dry.

DONE! Fill with candles and flowers. Use the scrolls and hooks to hang small wreaths, photos, vintage images, easter eggs or items for whatever the occasion is!

If you give this project a try share it in the Brassy Apple flickr group!
I will also be sharing my idea this week at these linky parties

Sweater Pillows - challenge/contest/pay it forward!

Diposting oleh fawaid on Rabu, 09 Februari 2011

Ever do things on a whim thinking NOTHING will ever come it! That's exactly what happened to me!

A local TV show (Studio 5) announced there were having a $5.00 craft challenge. I think there was 5 days to submit your entries, then the staff was going to pick their top 5 favorites. So with 1 day left to enter I submitted some recent past projects and honestly sort of forgot all about it.

Fast forward a week later. I get a call from the TV show saying I have been chosen as 1 of the top 5 projects and get to come on the show and demonstrate how to create my project. SAY WHAT???? If you read my blog then you know Studio 5 has had me on before. But what I was really surprised about was first, making the cut (thank you!) and second, the winner is selected by online votes (insert a little "booooo" from me). Online voting isn't my favorite thing. I feel like it's a popularity contest of who can spam their facebook, twitter and blog friends the most to get them to vote for their project to win.

SO - I am not asking you to vote for my project but simply take a look over the 5 projects and if you happen to like mine (sweater pillows) , give it a vote :) -voting poll box in the upper right. What is it that they say??......"It's an honor just to nominated." and truly it is.

(pssst! you may be thinking "She doesn't need to win." -  But I would love to pay it forward to benefit a local youth or children's group)

Here is my segment from the Show!

Mad Libs & Mad about Burner Covers!

Diposting oleh fawaid on Senin, 15 November 2010

Emily over at Is this is Really my Life? has a FUN post every Monday. It's called Mad Libs Monday and she asked me to be her Mad Libs guest today! ha ha ha. Pop over there and see how my Mad Libs turned out! Emily has her hand in many things including being a contributor on Today's Mama, Boutique Cafe and she is Sassy Scoops girl too! I even got to meet her 3 years ago at a conference. And can I just say, I love her hair!!

Studio 5 was kind enough to ask me back for another TV segment and share some of my Burner Cover ideas. At the end of the segment Brooke, the host said, "We are mad about Burner Covers now!" I thought it fit in with this "MAD" monday theme. Here is the TV segment if you didn't catch it and wanted to see!

What a HOOT!......DIY owl decor tutorial

Diposting oleh fawaid on Kamis, 11 November 2010

Just a quick shout out to any new blog readers who are stoping by from my appearance on Studio 5. Hello!!! :)

Continuing on with my "What can you do with burner covers?", I am totally twitterpated with this owl! and if you saw the TV segment this morning you saw this little cutie and know I have a pattern to share!

Let's get started:
OWL magnet/chalkboard decor

Materials:
10 inch burner cover
chalkboard paint
My owl pattern template (download it here)
scrapbook paper
scissors
pencil
glue (hot glue, craft glue, pick your favorite)
rhinestones or buttons

(**REMEMBER - if you craft one up please share your photo in the Brassy Apple Flickr GROUP!**)

Step 1: Spray the burner cover with chalkboard paint. Let dry.

Step 2: Print out the owl template and trace the pieces onto the scrapbook paper. Cut out 1 head, 1 beak, 2 eyes and 2 wings. **When cutting the wings, flip the template over to trace the 2nd wing**

Step 3: Eyes - Fold the circle into quarters. Cut a small wedge off each side edge and 2 wedges across the rounded top. Unfold. Add a 2nd smaller circle to the middle if desired. Add buttons or rhinestones to the center for an added pop!

Step 4: Use your dry cover as a guide and position it over the owl head. Lightly trace outline for re-positioning later. Make a few slits in the paper from the bottom edge to the traced line.

Step 5: Put glue underneath the upper lip where the owl head will go. Line up the cover and the head with the traced line and press the paper into the glue folding and creasing the paper as needed.

Step 6: Glue on the eyes. Glue the wings on the sides positioning them to hang off as desired. Glue the beak onto the top of cover in between the eyes. (this creates a fun 3D look)

Hang on the wall for all to see! Create chalk pictures, add messages for whatever you like. And remember because it's metal it doubles as a magnet board too!

And so it begins.....

Diposting oleh fawaid on Senin, 08 November 2010

Fall is my favorite time of year! I don't mind Winter too much except for all the "bugs" it brings. YUP bugs, like the stomach bug, the flu bug, the nasty cold bug....BOOO! I have been unfortunate enough to have caught 2 of these bugs! One last week and one this week. I am fighting a cold this week. We had beautiful, sunny and warm weather last week but have woken up to a 30-40 degree drop in temperatures and this:

It is a nice change. It is beautiful. I am enjoying it. I just wish all these "bugs" would go away!

In the mean time, I spent today inside listening to Christmas music (don't get mad! I was in the mood!) and finishing up photos for my TV spot on Friday. Here is a little peek into what I will be talking about this time!
