To-do's

Walks to the bay- check.

Dog patting- check.

Antique malling, cold turkey gorging, attic rifling- check check check.

Also noteworthy- consumption of 4 pies for 3 people in 4 days. If you do the math that comes out to be 1.333 pies per person. Taking in to account the fact that my mom eats like a bird, my dad and I shouldered more of the burden than the above figure represents out of the goodness of our hearts. Because we're nice like that.

DisplayLink Spotted at Silicon Valley Fry's

Diposting oleh fawaid

DisplayLink employees were shopping at Fry’s Electronics in Sunnyvale this weekend, and were happy to stumble upon an end-cap with a three monitor set up by Microsoft for Office 2007. The demo was utilizing a very simple PC with one display directly connected directly to the system and two further additional monitors connected using DisplayLink USB graphics adapters from Diamond Multimedia and IOGear.

Key messages were - “Spread out Your Workspace” and “Three Screens are Way Better Than One” and “Maximize Your Peripheral Experience.”

We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

Over the river and through the woods...

Diposting oleh fawaid on Rabu, 25 November 2009

Since tomorrow is thanksgiving, I should be writing a very impressive post about making some insane appley, cinnamony, brown sugary, buttery, nutty, flaky, crumbly, yummy thing because I'm a real life domestic goddess. But then I wake up and remember I'm not. Instead, I'm curled up under my quilt at home in Brooklyn, delightfully alone.

My train home leaves at 5am tomorrow morning and I'll be puttering around my folk's house till sunday or monday. Activities include long walks to the bay, dog patting, antique malling and standing in front of the fridge, hovering over a cold turkey carcass. I have a lot of things to be thankful for, no?

Happy thanksgiving, friends. If I could share a piece of pie with you, I would.

Dresses for wedding

Diposting oleh fawaid on Selasa, 24 November 2009

Dressing a wedding dress, girls seldom think of that the dress for wedding conceals in itself set of traditions. Certainly, today already it is impossible to name the majority of them actual, however the classical wedding dress continues to personify purity newly married.
For example, if prom dresses can be any colour, length and a style, wedding have some restrictions. First of all, on length and colour — the wedding dress is exclusively light tones and it should is obligatory to cover knees.

Modern wedding dresses

Wedding dressAlso the integral elements of a wedding dress long time were a veil and gloves.
The veil has got popularity during the Victorian epoch, however the tradition to cover a head with a fabric, has arisen in an antiquity. Was considered, that the top layer of a veil protects the bride from a malefice. In spite of the fact that today it is possible to name these traditions safely past vestiges, since then wedding dresses practically has not changed.

Veil in modern wedding dresses carry out a decorative role. And only the cape and a headdress remained obligatory attributes of a wedding dress. Only present a dress for wedding with a small translucent loop which is decorated by an embroidery of manual work!

Prom dressIn case the dress without sleeves, is rare when the wedding dress does without gloves. Long or short, with fingers or without them, gloves are capable to give completeness to any image. Besides, long time was considered unacceptable to cross a church threshold in a wedding dress with naked hands. Thin lacy gloves not only saved situation, but also added special charm newly married.

Riches of a wedding dress — very important detail. Richly should there was look a fabric with drawing. Richly embroidered jewelry a bodice. The picturesque treatment of light and shade of folds of a skirt was richly looked.

The white atlas with mirror outflow was considered as the most beautiful and expensive. Today ornaments of the bride from pearls seem natural. But the love of the European brides to pearls has been generated by the Italian fashion designers during the Renaissance epoch. With white prom dresses, pearl ornaments are gracefully looked. Pearl threads twisted sleeves, pearl necklaces decorated a neck, pearls intertwined in plaits from hair more largely.

Roses

Diposting oleh fawaid on Senin, 23 November 2009

I'm back, albeit begrudgingly. Does anyone else bore of the endless blogger/twitter/flickr cycle? Don't you want to just, oh I don't know, chuck the macbook out the window and take a walk around the block?

My exciting news is that I'm now working at Saipua full-time, arranging flowers and coordinating with brides-to-be. I'm in the love business, as Ginny would say. It's been 2 weeks already and I'm thrilled beyond all understanding. Best job ever.

It's bittersweet, though, because I had to leave my dear job at Moon River. I love that store and those people to bits. They threw me a surprise goodbye dinner party, complete with pretty dresses and a puppet show in 3 acts. A PUPPET SHOW.

I was at the botanic garden snapping photos when I realized I did basically this same rotting november roses post one year ago. Funny what a difference a year and a splurge-y camera make, even if the idea is the same.

This past year has been a total whirlwind, it feels like practically everything has changed. I'm now a live alone workaholic, with more jobs and less money. More readers but less to time to write. More pressure and less energy to cope. It's all terribly exciting and nerve-wracking.

Let's continue this tangent come next november's dying roses post, okay? I'm boring myself to tears with all of this existential dribble.

Place cards / Tags Tutorial.......

Diposting oleh fawaid on Kamis, 19 November 2009

A simple, quick project that will add some pizazz to your table, gifts and many other projects!

Materials:
scrapbook paper
fabric
spray adhesive
pencil
scissors
paper cutter
glue stick
embellishments (buttons, glitter, etc)
ruler

(Upload and share photos of your tags/place cards into the Brassy Apple Flickr Group)

Tags -

Step 1: Print your initial letters. Choose the fonts you like and the size for your project. Print the letters in reverse or turn them over onto your light table or simply use a bright window.

Trace the letters onto your paper or fabric.

Cut out your letters.

Step 2: Place the letters onto your fabric or paper you want to use for your background. Depending on your project, choose the size of your background, spacing evenly around your letter.

Cut your background piece. (Choose your shape - square, rectangle, circle, etc)

(If you are using fabric and need it to be more stiff, glue it to cardstock or heavy paper and cut.)

Step 3: Layout your tags looking at your design. Here is where you can decide what embellishments, if any, you would like to add.

Step 4: I wanted the "M" to pop more so I cut a small motif from some fabric to place behind the "M".

Step 5: Apply some spray adhesive to the back of the fabric piece following the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 6: Place and press the fabric motif to the background piece.

Step 7: Spray your letters and place them on your background pieces as well. Continue adding embellishments as you like.

And you are done! My tags mark my children's school projects/paper buckets that hang in one of your hallways.

Place cards -

Following the instructions above you can make chic place cards for your table for any event!

Layer up paper, fabric and the names of those attending for a custom look. Even going so far as to match your place cards with your handmade napkins! You are sure to have a table to remember!

The size I used for me place cards was 2" x 2". I used fabric fused to cardstock for the background piece of one and cardstock with small square of fabric glued in the middle of the other.

Then I simple printed the names on regular paper and glued them on the place cards.

Have fun and get creative with your projects! Remember there are no limits here - you design what you want and like!

Market Leaders Make Thin Client Computing Easy/Affordable for Global Educators

Diposting oleh fawaid on Selasa, 17 November 2009

Today three major market leaders are coming together to create a new era in Thin Client computing for education and emerging markets, where a complete PC for every person isn’t affordable or practical.

The ultra-convenient solution makes thin client computing available in larger installations than ever – up to ten seats per host. And with DisplayLink USB virtual graphics technology, it is an out-of-the-box thin client system that has the potential to save thousands of dollars compared to traditional thin client solutions.

· Microsoft introduced, last week, Microsoft Multipoint Server 2010 – a thin client OS that gives the host and up to ten users a complete Windows-7 like experience at each client.

· HP yesterday announced HP’s MultiSeat Thin Client solution– a thin client device that connects to the main PC via a single, easy USB cable and manages all client desktop peripherals including mouse, keyboard, monitor and more. (MultiSeat illustration.)

· Today DisplayLink announced it is providing drivers for the Microsoft Multipoint Server 2010, and the virtual graphics technology used by HP MultiSeat t100 Thin Client. DisplayLink USB virtual graphics technology uses familiar USB connectivity between the thin client and the host, thereby eliminating the need for running many cables, installing multiple graphics cards and other proprietary hardware in the host. Now thin client computing can be powered by desktop systems and sold at a fraction of the cost of today’s server architectures.

· Shared Resource Computing allows instructors or “hosts” to share an individual computer with 10 client OS sessions to surf the web, share documents and work independently from a single PC or notebook computer. This solution has the power to extend the reach of technology in learning environments like classrooms, labs, and libraries thereby giving more students access to Windows technology that can help them to learn, share, produce, communicate and positively impact their future employability.

Finally, low cost computing is a reality.

I owe you a real post but I'm finishing up last minute projects for the book, so you won't see more of me till, oh whenever I collapse in a big pile of done-ness. You know when friends start calling and saying "oh I was worried about you, you're not blogging anymore..... " that you've let it go on for too long.

Friends and loved ones- I am semi okay and I will not be returning any of your phone calls till the dust settles.

But I do have a bit of exciting news that will have to wait till I can do it justice.

Quilt change

Diposting oleh fawaid on Kamis, 12 November 2009

Now that it's freezing and we are staring down the dawning of winter, I swapped out my summer quilts for my equally ineffectual but more woolly and plaid versions. All away for the next oh, 8 months. Except for the pinky, that one's for Francesca.

summer quilts

Last Saturday my apartment was shot for the design*sponge book. Including a 9am wet hair, no makeup, no bra portrait of yours truly because I lack foresight and acceptable "girl" sensibilities.... Buy the book next year and you'll see. Brutal honesty.

The funny thing about having photos taken of your house (or at least my house) is how clean but chaotic it leaves things. Random stuff gets shoved into very funny hiding places. My oven mitts got stashed inside the oven, which I promptly forgot about and I baked them for 20 minutes while preheating to cook dinner. Burnt and stunk. Life is such a comedy.
