Is China Mobile a potential player in cable industry?

Diposting oleh fawaid on Minggu, 31 Juli 2011

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA: There has been speculation recently about the possibility of China Mobile investing in cable operators and funding the upgrade of the cable-TV networks in China to support broadband. However, as they both report to different government agencies (MIIT and SARFT), this is unlikely to happen, according to Ovum.

In a new report*, the independent telecoms analyst claims that investment from China Mobile in cable operators would enable China Mobile to gain ownership of a fixed access network, and would provide cable operators with secure capital to upgrade their networks to support digital services. However, although China Mobile needs fixed network assets to complete its services portfolio and cable operators are searching for funds to complete their network upgrades, there are major barriers that are unlikely to be overcome.

Jane Wang, Ovum senior analyst and author of the report, commented: “Different regulators will limit cross-investment. Indeed, for China Mobile to become a major stakeholder in the cable industry, a multi-regulator approach would be required.” However, both government agencies will seek to protect their own interests and those of their industries.

“Competition between the two could only be resolved by the central government adopting a national broadband network plan similar to the one in Australia. However, such a plan was not included in China’s 12th Five-Year Plan (2011–2015), released this year.”

China Mobile’s 2011 capex plan focuses on investments in its mobile network. Significant investments in fixed infrastructure and services are not on the agenda.

Small-scale cooperation between China Mobile and cable operators in some cities or provinces has been seen. However, as a listed company, China Mobile must seek stakeholder agreement for the large-scale investment that would be required in a national cable network.

“Cross-industry investment has rarely been allowed among state-owned companies and China Mobile shows no sign of such investment in the near future,” concluded Ms Wang.

Yes, That Flash Drive Will Work on your Mac

Diposting oleh fawaid

One of the concerns of new Mac owners is whether or not an external drive will work on their Mac. But you shouldn't fear, I haven't found a flash drive that doesn't work with a Mac yet. This is because most drive manufactures make drives that are formatted in a way that allows it to work on both Macs and PCs.

However, there are drives that are specifically formatted for Windows. Out of the box, they won't work on a Mac. You won't be able to open or read them. However, these drives can be reformatted with ease, and they'll work fine after a quick procedure. As a reminder, formatting a drive will delete all contents on it, you can't do this if you'd like to save the data on the drive.

Symantec announces July 2011 Symantec Intelligence Report

Diposting oleh fawaid

BANGALORE, INDIA: Symantec Corp. announced the publication of its July 2011 Symantec Intelligence Report, now combining the best research and analysis from the Symantec.cloud MessageLabs Intelligence Report and the Symantec State of Spam & Phishing Report.

This month’s analysis reveals a significant increase in activity related to what may be described as a aggressive and rapidly changing form of generic polymorphic malware. With one in 280.9 emails identified as malicious in July, the rise accounted for 23.7 percent of all email-borne malware intercepted in July; more than double the same figure six months ago, indicating a much more aggressive strategy on the part of the cyber criminals responsible.

“The number of variants, or different strains of malware involved in each attack has grown dramatically, by a factor of 25 times, when compared to the previous six months. This is a disturbing proliferation in such a short time, increasing the risk profiles of many organizations as these new strains are much harder to detect using traditional security defenses,” said Abhijit Limaye, director, Security Response, Symantec.

The report shows that the malware is frequently contained inside an executable within the attached ZIP archive file, and often disguised as a PDF file or an office document, for example. “This new aggressive approach to distributing generic polymorphic malware on such a scale should be concerning for many businesses, particularly for those who rely solely on more traditional security countermeasures, which this type of malware is designed to evade. One example of this technique involves changing the startup code in almost every version of the malware; subtly changing the structure of the code and making it harder for emulators built-in to many anti-virus products to identify the code as malicious,” added Limaye.

Further analysis also reveals that phishing attacks have been seeking various means to exploit vulnerable cell phone users. According to Limaye, “Two key areas in which we can see this trend are, firstly, the increase in phishing against wireless application protocol (WAP) pages, which are lightweight Web pages designed for smaller mobile devices such as cell phones; and secondly, the use of compromised domain names that have been registered for mobile devices, for example, using the .mobi top-level domain.”

Symantec has identified phishing sites spoofing such Web pages and has been monitoring the trend. In July, social networking and information services brands were frequently observed in these phishing sites. The primary motive of these attacks continues to be identity theft. Targeting cell phone users is just part of a new strategy for achieving the same result.

Other report highlights:
Spam: In July 2011, the global ratio of spam in email traffic rose to 77.8 percent (one in 1.29 emails); an increase of 4.9 percentage when compared with June 2011.

Phishing: In July, phishing email activity increased by 0.01 percentage points since June 2011; one in 319.3 emails (0.313 percent) comprised some form of phishing attack.

E-mail-borne threats: The global ratio of email-borne viruses in email traffic was one in 280.9 emails (0.333 percent) in July, an increase of 0.01 percentage points since June 2011.

Web-based malware threats: In July, Symantec Intelligence identified an average of 6,797 Web sites each day harboring malware and other potentially unwanted programs including spyware and adware; an increase of 25.5 percent since June 2011.

Endpoint threats: The most frequently blocked malware for the last month was W32.Ramnit!html. This is a generic detection for .HTML files infected by W32.Ramnit[3], a worm that spreads through removable drives and by infecting executable files. The worm spreads by encrypting and then appending itself to files with .DLL, .EXE and .HTM extensions. Variants of the Ramnit worm accounted for 17.3 percent of all malicious software blocked by endpoint protection technology in July.

Modify Lion Features with Terminal

Diposting oleh fawaid

You may be aware that you can customize Mac OS features with the Terminal. Apple keeps certain, more complex options out of the System Preferences app. But, if you'd like to change the behavior of Lion more than System Preferences allows, check out these four terminal commands, compiled by MacWorld.

As a reminder, to open the Terminal application, go into Applications -> Utilities. From here you can enter commands. Terminal is an incredibly useful Application, but most users will never use it. However, if you want to customize features not found within an application, it's a great tool. All of these customizations are reversible, just re-enter the command with true instead of false (or vise versa).

iPhone 5 Case Design Suggests New Form Factor

Diposting oleh fawaid

If this is in fact a photo of a case designed for the upcoming iPhone 5, then Apple could have a major design change planned for their iPhone. While some rumors have said the 5th generation iPhone would essentially be an iPhone 4 with Apple's A5 processor, others have said that it would feature a larger screen and a "teardrop" shape. If these cases were made for the iPhone 5, it seems as though the latter would be true.
A mockup of the iPhone 5
The case points to an iPhone that is 5 inches long, and  2.8 inches wide. Compare that to the current iPhone, which is 4.5 inches long, and 2.31 inches wide. The case here also shows that the next iPhone could have a "teardrop" design, being slightly thicker at the top than the bottom.

The iPhone 5 is expected to be released this Fall.

Home for good

I'm very sorry to say that Elmwood season is over for the summer. Brooklyn is home again and I must admit I've shed a few tears over it. The upside is now I get to relive it all by going through my photos (in the comfort of my local coffee shop's air conditioning). This bouquet is from a project that's been in the works for almost 10 months, it's going to be done next week and I'm bursting with excitement to show you. Playing with flowers at the house, surrounded by my dearest friends and family, really overwhelms me with gratitude. My honest-to-god happy place.

Getting to live out a New Hampshire daydream for a month makes city streets a bitter pill to swallow, but for now I'm trying to look at New York with fresh eyes. Those streets- along with the sounds of ice cream trucks and honking horns, rainy mornings that make the pavement steam, my thirsty houseplants and timid kitties- those are all home to me and it's nice to see them again.

Angry Birds DIY set up

Diposting oleh fawaid on Kamis, 28 Juli 2011

If your kids love angry birds like mine do - this is sure to be a winner! Have the game come to LIFE with a few simple supplies.

Materials:
Small round-ish rocks (however many you want to paint for birds and pigs)
Paint (We used black, red, white, light blue, yellow and green)
brushes
marker
assorted blocks
slingshot ($1 store water toy launcher)

Cover your work surface to protect it. I divided up the rocks and colors and let my boys paint them up.

When they were dry I added the face details with a tiny bit of paint and a black marker

Head OUTSIDE to build a structure to knock down! I placed a lap board on the grass it give the structure and flat solid surface to sit on. Then I let my kids build it up with blocks and place the pigs inside.

Use a slingshot to launch your angry birds into the air! REPEAT, repeat, REPEAT!!! lots of fun and a great way to entertain them outside in the summer.

I will be linking up my idea around the web this week!
