Apple's The Only Tech Company Standing up for Workers' Rights

Diposting oleh fawaid on Sabtu, 10 Maret 2012

Apple has been getting a lot of flak over working conditions at a separate company, Foxconn. Try to make sense of it if you will, but what it comes down to is the fact that Apple is popular, and there's more profit in making a fuss over a profitable company.
But, more to the point, Apple has been working harder to ensure workers have the best working conditions. They've invited independent inspectors to their factories, during the height of the production of the new iPad, and without notifying their suppliers. They couldn't have found a time to do a more honest inspection.

Other tech companies have been completely silent, and for good reason. They're doing little to nothing. A number of these tech companies were asked "Does your company have any plans to let independent auditors check up on your suppliers’ factories?". A simple question, and yet they all dodged it. A few responses are below.

HP and Samsung Have a Lot in Common

Diposting oleh fawaid on Senin, 30 Januari 2012

Quick, guess what HP and Samsung have in common? If you guessed "they copied from Apple", you're absolutely right. Although, to be fair, what tech company hasn't? The photo up top isn't of a MacBook and a cheaper MacBook with a weird trackpad. On the right, the original aluminum beauty: the MacBook. On the left is the HP Envy. Rightly named, because it's quite obvious who HP is envious of.

You Can Own a Pet or an HP Computer, not Both

Diposting oleh fawaid on Jumat, 09 Desember 2011

Own a pet? Better find a farm for it to go live on if you're planning on buying an HP computer. Why? Because HP considers pet ownership an action that voids your warranty. No, seriously.

Chris sent his HP EliteBook in for repair. HP was quick to get back to him, telling him the repair wouldn't be covered by his warranty. They wouldn't even allow him to speak with a supervisor. Cat hair had gotten into the computer through the exhaust ports. Dust, hair, even spiders get into computers. It's actually something that every computer has (although spiders are very rare). If your computer is more than a few weeks old, it has plenty of dust in it, and, if you have pets, even some pet hair. The amount of hair in this case wasn't all that bad, as you can see by the photo below.

Apple Paying Fair Share in Corporate Taxes

Diposting oleh fawaid on Minggu, 06 November 2011

According to a report done by Citizens for Tax Justice and nonpartisan Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, Apple paid a 31% tax rate, just shy of the 35% corporate rate. Intel was also among the few tech companies paying a 31% tax rate.

The study examined 280 corporations on the Fortune 500 list. Of those 280 companies, 30 paid nothing in federal taxes over the past 3 years. These companies received over $223 billion in tax subsidies. That's money that could have gone to measures like health care reform, job creation, or simply to combat the deficit.

Other tech companies on the list, such as HP, Yahoo, and Amazon paid far less than 30% in taxes. Amazon, for example, paid only 7.9% in taxes on 1.8 billion dollars of yearly profit between 2008 and 2010. If Amazon paid the same tax rate that Apple had paid, they would have paid over 400 million more in taxes over the two year period.

The Occupy movement has brought more attention to corporate greed, corruption, and questioning corporation involvement in politics. Corporations, through lobbying and campaign contributions, have managed to ensure that laws and policies benefit their businesses. They've gotten away with scamming the government and American people out of billions of dollars. With these things in mind, consumers may want to avoid buying products or services from companies that dodge taxes. It's good to know that Apple is on the right side of the fence here.

WebOS Runs Faster on an iPad

Diposting oleh fawaid on Jumat, 19 Agustus 2011

There was some frustration between the WebOS developers and HP, apparently. The developers tried testing WebOS on an iPad, and found that it ran twice as fast on the iPad as it did on the HP Touchpad. Not only that, but it even ran faster on the iPad through Mobile Safari than it did on HP's hardware.
I feel bad for anyone who bought a Touchpad. It ran an OS it was designed for at half the speed of hardware that was hacked to run it. And to run slower than an iOS web app? That's just shameful.

Web OS Goes Down, and Stays Down

Diposting oleh fawaid on Kamis, 18 Agustus 2011

Last year, HP acquired Palm, primarily for Web OS, the company's smartphone OS. The purchase price? 1.2 billion. HP was going to continue to make WebOS phones and tablets, and they thought they would be able to succeeded in marketing WebOS where Palm had failed. However, just 16 months later, HP has thrown in the towel. As of today, HP announced that they would be discontinuing all WebOS products. WebOS is no more.

WebOS was the operating system on such products as the Palm Pre, the HP Pree 2, the HP Veer, and the Slate. It didn't have the same popularity as iOS or Android, but there were a few dedicated fans to the operating system.
