iOS 5.1 Beta 2 Features Photo Stream Deleting

Photo Stream is a feature of iCloud that allows users to access their photos on any device. Snap a photo on your iPhone, and it's instantly available on your Mac or iPad. However, I don't use the service, and that's all because of one big problem. Fortunately, Apple's removing the biggest restriction to Photo Stream. With iOS 5.1 beta 2, users can delete individual photos in Photo Stream.

Without being able to delete photos in your Photo Stream, the stream gets filled up pretty quick. I often quickly snap a number of photos of a subject, comparing them later. If you're not quick, however, all those photos end up on your Photo Stream, and you can't delete them without cleaning all the photos in your Photo Stream.

Now that Apple's adding the ability to delete photos in the iCloud Photo Stream, it's going to become a very useful part of iCloud.

Airport Utility App Coming for iOS

Most routers direct you to a local address to access the settings of the router. The interfaces are often sloppy. Apple wouldn't have any of that, so they use a dedicated application instead, available for both Macs and PCs. With Apple ushering the way into the Post-PC era, they'd naturally need such an app for iOS. One of the key features of iOS 5 is the fact that you can use an iOS device running it completely without a computer, so it should be able to update and set up a wireless router.

If this screenshot is to be believed, Apple's already working on such an app. It's lucky too, because without an app like this, you wouldn't be able to completely ditch your computer for an iOS device. Apple may plan on releasing it tomorrow, along with iOS 5.

iTunes 10.5 Released

If you're planning on downloading iOS 5 tomorrow, you'd better update iTunes first. If you're a Mac user, it's as simple as going to Apple (in the top menubar) and clicking "Software Update...". If you're a Windows user, you can find the Apple Software Update application (probably in your start menu), or just re-download it from Apple here.

The update is necessary for iOS 5, and also brings iCloud, Automatic Downloads, the ability to download previously purchased content with ease, and enables WiFi syncing with iOS 5 devices.

iOS Updates to Come Over WiFi and 3G

One of the new features of iOS 5 is the ability to update your iOS device without a computer. This means you can download updates wirelessly. Through searching through the latest SDK developers have found support for over the air updates on 3G as well as WiFi. It's uncertain how large the updates could be over 3G, especially since many carriers have data caps. A person's iPhone will only download the update if there's enough disk space and battery life available to download and install the update.
