Google took the idea of an app centric touchscreen smartphone from Apple, and ran with it. Needless to say, the people at Apple who worked hard over a few years on the design for iOS and the iPhone weren't too happy.

Next iPhone to Use New, Thinner Touch Screen?

A rumor coming from Digitimes reports that Apple is in talks with suppliers to provide new, slimmer touch screens for the iPhone. Touch screens right now are composed of a number of layers. There's the layer that actually displays the pixels, the LCD layer, then a layer of glass, after that, there's the layer that receives the touches, and finally, a protective layer of glass. It works great, and the tech already provides for incredibly thin devices. Not only that, but, at least on Apple products, there is no way to tell that you're not directly touching the pixel displaying portion of the screen (this isn't true on all touch screens, like the one on the Kindle Fire). But, expect the next iOS devices to shave off a few millimeters, thanks to new touch screen technology.

Next iPhone to use Liquid Metal?

Korean website ETNews claims the next iPhone won't have a glass backing, but will instead use Liquid Metal. If you'll remember, Apple bought rights to use the high tech alloy back in August of 2010. The alloy is incredibly strong, and would improve the durability of the iPhone substantially. Dropping a phone made of liquid metal would cause it to bounce, not break. Also, antenna reception wouldn't be damaged by the material.

Liquid metal is perfect for the iPhone, and really any other Apple product. It's strong, impact resistant, and looks great. Hopefully there's some validity to this rumor, because if so, this will definitely be the most impressive iPhone to date.

Pebble: The Watch that will Connect to your Smartphone

I don't wear my watch all the time, usually just for work. The Pebble could change all that. It's a watch that uses Bluetooth to connect to an iPhone or Android device. From there, it can display a whole lot of information on its e-ink display. It can also control your music and more from the controls on the side. Plus, you can download apps, watch faces, and more to expand upon the functionality of the watch. The developers created apps for running, biking, and plenty of new watch faces. They're also making the sdk available for free so other developers can create apps for the watch. These apps can take advantage of the watch, smart phone it's connected to, or the accelerometer within the watch. The apps are sent to the Pebble using an app on the smartphone. Plus, thanks to the e-ink display, the watch has a battery life of 7+ days, and charges over USB.

It's a smart watch in a smartphone world, and it's about time. Pebble Technology put the Pebble up on Kickstarter today with the goal of raising $100,000. They met that goal in no time, and they've already raised over $380,000. In fact, they raised over $25,000 while I was writing this article. You thought I was joking about Instagram photos getting blurrier? John Gruber Tweeted these two photos, one taken with an iPhone 4S, and the other taken with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Aka, the flagship Android device from Samsung and Google.

iPhone Tops JD Power User Satisfaction Survey

Unsurprisingly, Apple has taken the top spot with their iPhone in J.D. Power and Associate's user satisfaction survey. In fact, it was the only brand that received 5 stars. In fact, their score was so high that it offset the average, as only one other company was above the industry average, HTC. Although, even HTC only scored 4 stars.

Apple has taken the top spot in every customer satisfaction survey for quite a few years now. It's no wonder why Apple is the most valuable company in the world. They make great products, and their customers are consistently the most satisfied customers. The customer support is amazing and their products are so great that users rarely need it. Besides, how else could you explain all the Apple centric blogs written by raving fans? Ahem.

iPhone Stops Bullet from Killing Man

One man is very lucky to be alive, and he has his iPhone to thank. A 49 year old Dutch man was sitting in his van. He was approached by a group of people, and was shot at 5 times. 4 bullets missed, but one hit him in the chest. Fortunately, it first went through his car window, then through his iPhone. By the time the bullet reached his body, it didn't have enough speed to go through his chest.

But before you go out and craft a suit of iPhones, remember, iPads are bigger. Also, bulletproof armor is a bit cheaper.

Next iPhone to be Released in Fall

"Reliable sources" over at Macotakara say that Apple will be sticking to the Fall release schedule for the iPhone. Apple usually waits 12 months between iPhone releases, this year the iPhone 4S was a unique case. After the iPhone 4S, Apple will continue their usual release schedule, otherwise, customers may become upset with the changing schedule.

It's unfortunate that we may not see the 6th generation iPhone sooner, but it is good to know that Apple will continue a reliable schedule in the future.

Apple Settles Class Action Lawsuit over Antennagate

Do you remember Antennagate? When the iPhone 4 was first released, there was a lot of concern about the so called "death grip". Most of it was perpetuated by Gizmodo, as they were unhappy after they weren't invited to the iPhone 4 reveal. Of course, they weren't invited because they purchased a stolen iPhone 4 prototype. After getting an iPhone 4, I confirmed that there is a drop in signal if you cover the lower left corner of the phone, but the drop is comparable to other phones. In other words, it's not a big deal.

Band Creates Entire Album on iPhone

Band One Like Son has created an entire studio-quality album with nothing but iPhones. Well, I shouldn't say "nothing". They did use instruments, vocals, and accessories like the GuitarJack and Ampkit Link to connect their instruments to the iPhone. Other than that, all recording and editing was done on an iPhone. That's quite impressive, both for the iPhone and the band who was able to use it so well. The quality is actually great.
You can check it out on their website, as well as buy the full album. The digital album is $7 if you buy directly from their site, $9.99 if you buy from iTunes. Of course, iTunes also splits the album up, so you can download the specific songs you'd like.

There are samples both on their site and iTunes. Check it out. Even if you're not a fan of Powerpop but you could at least appreciate the quality of the work done without computers, and just an iPhone.

iPhone Holds Resale Value Best

Apple products always hold their resale value longer than their competition. Macs have been the biggest example of this. Sure, the price of a Mac may be a bit higher than competitive hardware, but they always have better features, and the resale value for an Apple computer is always much higher than the competition.

Turns out the same is true of the iPhone. Better quality, looks, longevity, and features will do that. Android phones are often out of date within a few days of release, let alone a few months down the road. Because of Android fragmentation, you can expect not to see many updates on even a newer Android phone. This lowers resale value considerably. Add into the fact that Android phones don't look as good as the iPhone, making them less desirable in general, and the fact that fact that Android phones are far more generic, you can bet that Android phones are going to be valued far less than iPhones 18 months after the purchase.

iPhone 5 Ready for a Summer Launch?

According to a "reliable source" within Foxconn, the next version of the iPhone is ready for production. That means it could be ready for a release this summer.
The iPhone 4S was released in Fall, but before that, every other generations of the iPhone were released in the summer. However, it's thought that Apple may have been delaying the release of the iPhone 4S. This year, they might just get back on the summer release track.

So if the iPhone is close to being ready for production, what does it look like? That much is uncertain still. The source claims that there are a few prototypes being passed around, and each one looks fundamentally different. They claim that each one has a 4 inch screen, and that they don't look like the iPhone 4/S.

The Apple rumors are just heating up. It's like the beginning of the holiday season in stores. Exciting, and of course, just a little too early.

iPhone #1 Smartphone on Verizon and AT&T

Verizon customers sure are happy to finally have a new iPhone. Verizon sold 4.3 million iPhones during the fourth quarter of 2011. Overall, they sold 7.7 million smartphones. That's nearly 56%.
But the sales figures for AT&T iPhones were even better. A whopping 81% of all smartphones sold on AT&T were iPhones. Out of 9.4 million smartphones sold, 7.6 million were iPhones.

If the iPhone retains this popularity, expect the iPhone to be the dominant smartphone in no time.

T-Mobile iPhones Getting 3G

It seems as though some people using unlocked iPhones on T-Mobile's network are reporting that they're finally getting 3G. If you're unaware, the technology T-Mobile uses for 3G is incompatible with the iPhone. However, it looks as though T-Mobile has broadened their spectrum.

Users in Nevada and Northern California are reporting the speed boost. T-Mobile isn't ready to roll out the change nationwide just yet, but they could be in the process of it. If T-Mobile supports this spectrum, there's no reason they shouldn't be able to get the iPhone next year. I'm sure this will make a large number of T-Mobile customers happy, as they have over 1 million iPhone users on their network, despite no official support for it.
