Next iPhone to Use New, Thinner Touch Screen?

A rumor coming from Digitimes reports that Apple is in talks with suppliers to provide new, slimmer touch screens for the iPhone. Touch screens right now are composed of a number of layers. There's the layer that actually displays the pixels, the LCD layer, then a layer of glass, after that, there's the layer that receives the touches, and finally, a protective layer of glass. It works great, and the tech already provides for incredibly thin devices. Not only that, but, at least on Apple products, there is no way to tell that you're not directly touching the pixel displaying portion of the screen (this isn't true on all touch screens, like the one on the Kindle Fire). But, expect the next iOS devices to shave off a few millimeters, thanks to new touch screen technology.

Next iPhone to use Liquid Metal?

Korean website ETNews claims the next iPhone won't have a glass backing, but will instead use Liquid Metal. If you'll remember, Apple bought rights to use the high tech alloy back in August of 2010. The alloy is incredibly strong, and would improve the durability of the iPhone substantially. Dropping a phone made of liquid metal would cause it to bounce, not break. Also, antenna reception wouldn't be damaged by the material.

Liquid metal is perfect for the iPhone, and really any other Apple product. It's strong, impact resistant, and looks great. Hopefully there's some validity to this rumor, because if so, this will definitely be the most impressive iPhone to date.

Apple Could be Working on iOS App Developer Tool

Have you ever had a great idea for an app, but lacked the programming skill to make your vision a reality? Apple's looking to help people like you. For a computer programmer, developing an iOS app isn't extremely difficult. Objective C is a relatively easy language to learn, especially if you already know C++, and Cocoa Touch is a powerful and easy to implement framework. But, if you don't know what I'm talking about, then you probably would have some difficulty programming an app. But, in the same way that Apple made textbooks easy to create with the iBooks Author app, they're looking to make iOS app development easy for anyone.

New iPhone Rumors Start Up

Today, a number of rumors were started, ranging from what the iPhone will be shaped like, what it will have inside, how they're testing it, and when it will be released. Apple has Worked on a Game Controller for iOS

When Apple revealed the new iPad, they said the retina display, ram upgrade, and A5X processor would put iPad gaming on par with game consoles. Though there are games out that take advantage of the increase in power and graphics capabilities of the new iPad, none have really pushed it to the limit yet, so these claims have not been verified... yet.

Still, Apple could be preparing for iOS to take over serious gaming, as well as mobile gaming. One thing that may sweeten the deal would be a controller. According to a source at Anandtech claims that they know Apple has been working on an official controller for iOS. A patent application from 2008 certainly proves that Apple has at least thought about such a device. Whether or not the report is true, or if Apple would actually release a device is uncertain. Apple often works on projects that end up going unreleased, so even if they are working on a controller, there's no guarantee it would be released.

There have been 3rd party controllers for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch in the past. However, while they work well, none have gotten enough developer support to become really popular. Developers have a hard time committing to a 3rd party controller, as they don't know if people will buy them, or if the support for the controller will worth their time to add. But, if Apple were to release a controller, it would get more support from developers, and be a more attractive option for consumers. Then there are some that say the touch screen is all any iOS device needs for games, and this seems to be the kind of stance Apple would take as well.

Is Apple Going to Use a New Logo?

At the end of the keynote last Wednesday, as Tim Cook was walking off stage, the Apple logo you see above came up on the screen. It didn't take long before speculation started up again. It seems like just yesterday we were trying to figure out what Apple was doing with the iPad and Apple TV. Now we're moving on to the logo.

Apple's Already Testing iOS 6

Ars technic a claims they have evidence of HD iPads using iOS 6. The above photo shows a portion of their logs. From it, you can see that iOS 6 is being tested on iPads. According to ars, the iPads had a screen resolution of 2048x1536. All the visits were coming from Cupertino California, Apple headquarters. Apple's already prepping iOS 6, and it should be released this year. Apple could preview it with the iPad 3, or they could hold off until the release of the next iPhone. We'll have a better idea on the 7th.

Houston Apple Store to Open March 16th

The newest Apple Store set to open in Houston Texas will be up and running on March 16th. Normally I don't report on every little Apple store opening, so what's the big deal with this one?

It's because it coincides with a likely date for the release of the next iPad. Apple often makes products available on a Friday. March 9th is a possible date for the iPad release, but it's likely that Apple will wait until the 16th to actually release the iPad 3.

The fact that Apple set this store to open up on a Friday close to the iPad 3 reveal does hint at the fact that it may be the release date for the iPad 3. It's all speculation until next Wednesday though.

Looks Like the iPad 3 Will Have a Home Button

If this picture truly is of the digitizer (front plate and touch input) for the next iPad, then we can put the "no home button" rumor to rest. Of course, we can't be absolutely sure these are the front casing of the iPad 3. However, it seems plausible. The connection from the digitizer to the logic board is different. Of course, there's always the possibility of faking something, but these photos look pretty real to me.
So, Apple fans, you have less to worry about now. The iPad 3 will have a home button after all. Expect Apple to reveal the new iPad next Wednesday.

iPad 3, Apple TV Could Be Available Soon

According to previous rumors, the iPad 3 could be in the hands of retailers as soon as March 9th. With the announcement on March 7th, could Apple be planning on releasing the iPad 3 immediately after the announcement?

It's uncommon, but not unlikely. Apple normally reveals a product at least a week before making it available. This gives customers time to preorder it. However, due to the dwindling Apple TV reserves at a number of retailers, it's expected to be released soon. Apple would most likely release the Apple TV and iPad 3 at the same time. Seeing as Apple wouldn't be willing to wait a month with no stock of a product, many expect them to be released soon.

Hopefully this rumor is true. It's always tough waiting for a new Apple product to be released after seeing it during a keynote.

Is the iPad 3 Already Being Shipped to the US?

According to a small Chinese blog, the iPad 3 has already begun shipping to the US. Apparently, deliveries to retailers should be no later than March 9th. This means that if the iPad 3 is revealed on March 7th, Apple could release it less than a week later.
Since this is only a small site spreading this rumor (which has blown up over the net), you should take it with a grain of salt. Still, it is expected that the iPad 3 will be released in March, so it's not too hard to imagine an early March release.

Next iPhone to be Released in Fall

"Reliable sources" over at Macotakara say that Apple will be sticking to the Fall release schedule for the iPhone. Apple usually waits 12 months between iPhone releases, this year the iPhone 4S was a unique case. After the iPhone 4S, Apple will continue their usual release schedule, otherwise, customers may become upset with the changing schedule.

It's unfortunate that we may not see the 6th generation iPhone sooner, but it is good to know that Apple will continue a reliable schedule in the future.

This Could be the iPad 3 Case

According to MICGadget, this is the case of the iPad 3. As you can see, it has a tapered design, like the iPhone 5 was supposed to have, and like the MacBook Air. The widest end is larger than the iPad 2, but seems to taper down to the same size. Due to the edges being more tapered, it will still appear to be thinner.

What could the increase in size be for? If the iPad 3 will have a retina display, it's going to need a bigger battery. Also, a faster processor and 4G chip would also require a larger battery. With all Apple's adding to the hardware, it's going to need a bigger battery to support those upgrades. Until battery technology is improved, a compromise will have to be made, a larger battery means equivalent or better battery life, even with upgraded internals.

Seeing the case makes the iPad 3 seem all that more real. This looks like it really could be the next iPad case. Current rumors are pointing to the reveal on March 7th.

Is this the iPad 3?

This photo comes from a Chinese source, Apple Daily, claiming it's the iPad 3. The source claims the new design is more tapered at the edges, but otherwise looks mostly like the iPad 2.
But the big surprise is in the camera. The photos reveal that the lens does indeed look bigger than the camera lens on the old iPad. This suggests an improved camera, which was to be expected. However, Apple Daily also claims the new camera is an 8 megapixel camera, putting it on par with the iPhone 4S.

Does the iPad really need such a good camera though? The old adage is "the best camera is the one you have with you", but how often would a person rather pull out their iPad than their iPhone?

The source finished up their article by claiming Apple would be releasing the iPad 3 on March 7th. Either that, or revealing the iPad 3 on the 7th... it's hard to always trust the Chinese translation.

The iPad 3 Will Have a 2048x1536 Display

There has been a display panel going around the net, which is rumored to be the display in the upcoming iPad 3. MacRumors got their hands on it, and put it under a microscope. What they found was double the pixel density in the new display, with the same display size, 9.7 inches. This means the next iPad will have a higher resolution than some Macs, including the 21.5" iMac. The display will be so sharp, it will be nearly impossible to see the pixels on the screen, just like the iPhone 4. If this screen truly will be the display on the iPad 3, it's going to be an impressive tablet.

New Apple TV on the Way

An employee at Best Buy has reported that his store did not order more Apple TVs. In fact, they just let stock run out. However, the big pice of evidence is the fact that the system wouldn't let employees order them for customers.

It's been known for a while that Apple was preparing the next update for the Apple TV. A new code name, J33, even showed up in a previous iOS 5.1 beta. But, when retailers start letting stock run out on a popular product, it usually means that a refresh is less than a few weeks away.

Unlike the iPad rumors, features of the Apple TV are mostly unknown. However, 1080p output is expected, although this would also require an update to iTunes.
The current generation Apple TV has been out for some time. It's ready for an update.

Apple to Unveil iPad 3 on March 7th?

The first iPad rumor to mention a specific date! Whether or not it's reliable is anybody's guess.

The rumor comes from iMore, who claims that their sources on the matter have been very reliable in the past.

Their source claims that the iPad 3 will be revealed March 7th. According to this mystery person (or people), the new iPad will have a quad core processor, retina display with a 2048×1536 resolution (whoa!) and possible LTE.

It seems odd that the source would know the exact date the iPad will be announced, the processor it will have, and the exact resolution of the screen, but can't be certain about whether or not it will have 4G LTE.

Still, March 7th sounds like a good date, and fits well with every previous rumor. In fact, just about everything in this leak fits along with other rumors, so it may very well be factual (that or the source has been reading Apple blogs). You decide!

Target Worker Confirms Early March Release of iPad 3

Normally I'd take this with a grain of salt, but it does align with other rumors of this nature. According to a "credible" source at Target, the company is preparing their system for the iPad 3, which they're expecting in early March. Apparently, the source is very close to the internet marketing division within Target, and therefore is privy to this sort of information.

All rumors thus far have pointed towards an announcement in the first week of March, and a release a short time later.

Apple's in "Crunch Mode" to Get Apps for iPad 3 Reveal

According to The Next Web, Apple is currently trying to get developers to create HD versions of their apps. Apple seems to be focusing on already visually stunning apps, which gives greater credibility to the rumor of a retina display on the iPad 3. Also, Apple is apparently working with their normal advertising partners to prepare commercials showcasing some of these apps.

iPad 3 Announcement in the 1st Week of March?

According to All Things D, Apple will be announcing the iPad 3 within the first week of March. This rumor comes curtesy of a reliable source at All Things D, who has a decent track record of being correct about Apple announcements. This means sometime between March 1st and 9th, Apple will reveal the next iPad. It will most likely be released at the end of March or early in April.

The NY Times has also reported that the iPad 3 is going to get a huge speed upgrade, and a new HD display. Their source described the screen as "truly amazing". On the outside, it won't look much different than the iPad 2. Which isn't too surprising, as the iPad hasn't changed in design too much since the first generation.
