The new Apple TV was announced at the same time as the new iPad. Unfortunately that means it got a lot less attention than it could have. Of course, it was also a relatively small upgrade. The big new feature? 1080p output. It's not much, but Apple also upgraded the videos on iTunes to display in full 1080p HD. The previous generation of Apple TV won't be able to play videos in 1080p though, as the hardware upgrade in the new Apple TV is necessary to process the video. The new Apple TV has more ram, and a single core version of the A5 processor. Those upgrades are enough to allow the new Apple TV to play 1080p video, while the older one will not be able to do so. The new iPad will also be able to display 1080p AirPlay mirroring from an iPad, while the previous generation will continue to display 720p HD video.

According to previous rumors, the iPad 3 could be in the hands of retailers as soon as March 9th. With the announcement on March 7th, could Apple be planning on releasing the iPad 3 immediately after the announcement?
It's uncommon, but not unlikely. Apple normally reveals a product at least a week before making it available. This gives customers time to preorder it. However, due to the dwindling Apple TV reserves at a number of retailers, it's expected to be released soon. Apple would most likely release the Apple TV and iPad 3 at the same time. Seeing as Apple wouldn't be willing to wait a month with no stock of a product, many expect them to be released soon.
Hopefully this rumor is true. It's always tough waiting for a new Apple product to be released after seeing it during a keynote.

Ever wish you could mirror your Mac's display onto your Apple TV in the same way you can your iPad or iPhone 4S? Then good news, everyone!
AirParrot is a new application that does just that. It's incredibly easy to use, and even on full quality has very few issues streaming video. Even full screen streaming content shows up well on the big screen.
The application is $10, and available on
their website. It's incredibly convenient, and works quite well (otherwise I wouldn't be posting about it). If you've been looking to mirror your Mac display on your Apple TV, definitely check it out.

An employee at Best Buy has reported that his store did not order more Apple TVs. In fact, they just let stock run out. However, the big pice of evidence is the fact that the system wouldn't let employees order them for customers.
It's been known for a while that Apple was preparing the next update for the Apple TV. A new code name, J33, even
showed up in a previous iOS 5.1 beta. But, when retailers start letting stock run out on a popular product, it usually means that a refresh is less than a few weeks away.
Unlike the iPad rumors, features of the Apple TV are mostly unknown. However, 1080p output is expected, although this would also require an update to iTunes.
The current generation Apple TV has been out for some time. It's ready for an update.

Apple released the iOS 5.1 beta to developers just a few days ago. Some developers look to make sure their apps work correctly with the new OS, other dive into it, looking for hints of future Apple hardware. One of the first signs that new Apple hardware is in the works is from these betas. What did they find? New iPhones, iPads, and an Apple TV update.

Apple could release an updated
Apple TV shortly. This rumor comes from the reduced price on
Amazon and Best Buy. The Apple TV previously cost $99. Amazon now has it for $90. Amazon also changed the name of the Apple TV to "Apple TV (2010)".

Nick Bilton of the New York Times claims that Apple is looking to build an Apple TV. Not just a set top box, like the current Apple TV, but a full TV set, complete with Siri navigation and voice control. Steve Jobs though the television industry was "broken". And who could disagree? You often don't get a choice in your cable provide, you can't get shows or channels a-la-carte, you have to buy a package which can be expensive, and shows are hard to watch legally if you don't have those stations. Wouldn't it be easier if you could just say to your TV "Play the latest episode of Doctor Who", even if you didn't have the BBC channel? With Siri, your remote would become your voice. You could quickly use commands like "play my recorded episode of Futurama", and your latest recorded episode would come on, no need to navigate through menus.
With any luck, we could see this integrated in the current Apple TVs as well, although they may require a hardware update or use of the iOS Remote app to take advantage of these new features. Steve wanted to change the television industry, and Apple just may do that before 2013.

Apple rolled out quite a few updates today. Though only an iOS and Lion update were expected, Apple also updated the Apple TV, iCloud.com, and released a number of apps for iOS.

Apple released the second generation
Apple TV in September of last year. Why didn't I review it then? Simple, I didn't have one. After the recent Apple event concerning iOS devices, I though it was safe enough to buy one, the next update won't be out for at least a few months.
So, does Apple have something special here?

The second generation of the
Apple TV was released last September. After over a year, some evidence that the next Apple TV is in the works has finally been revealed... just days after I went out and bought one (more on that later). A reference to an "Apple TV 3,1" has been found in iOS 5. The current Apple TV is referred to as 2,1.
What could it mean? Will Apple update the Apple TV with the new A5 processor? Will the Apple TV finally get apps? Weather, stock, internet browser, games, and more, all possible with the Apple TV, but the features haven't been released yet.
The update could still be a few months away. It could be released before the holiday season, in early 2012, or next year with other iOS devices. There's nothing but a bit of code in the latest version of iOS 5 suggestion that a new model is in the making, so there's no telling when it could be released.

Apple may be preparing a service called iTunes Replay. The service will apparently allow users to stream or re-download movies they have already purchased. It would be perfect for the Apple TV. Apple is also rumored to be preparing a subscription based streaming service that could compete with Netflix. This could be unveiled this fall, along-side the iCloud updates. With the uproar over the Netflix price increase, another competitor to Netflix would be incredibly welcome.

Today Apple release an update for the Apple TV that brings two new features: Vimeo support, and TV show purchases.
First off, Vimeo support. Popular (but not as popular as YouTube) video hosting site Vimeo, has been supported on other iOS devices for some time now, since Vimeo's switch to html5. The Apple TV runs on iOS, so with a quick software update, it is now able to access Vimeo movies.
Second up is the big one. The Apple TV doesn't have any on-board storage. It does, however, have access to your iTunes library through AirPlay, and now, through the cloud. Because of this, you can buy movies and tv shows right from your Apple TV, and play them through the cloud. You can then download them on your computer or iOS device.
It's a great update, especially the ability to finally purchase media from iTunes. iOS 5 is expected to roll out this Fall, so the Apple TV may get another update in the future.

Bluetooth support has been discovered within the latest Apple TV update. It's possible that iOS 5 will bring support for keyboards to the Apple TV, and possible extended support for controlling your Apple TV with another iOS device.
As of now, it seems like keyboard support is the only definite feature. This could enable the Apple TV to have more control over apps or games as well. While the Apple TV doesn't have downloadable apps yet, it is possible that these could come with an update. With keyboard support, users will have more control over their Apple TV, enabling apps and even a web browser. The Apple TV runs iOS, so there's no reason it shouldn't be able to get apps.
This fall the Apple TV could see a considerable update, and Apple has the opportunity to become the center of living room entertainment. The Apple TV is available now for just $99. However, it may be wise to hold out until after the iOS refresh this fall, to see if Apple has an update in store for the Apple TV.
