Today, Apple released another update to Java. This is the big one, it adds further protection against Flashback (and other trojans like it), and it also completely removes the trojan if your Mac was infected. The update will stop Java applets in your browser from automatically running, which will help prevent issues like this in the future. Also, the security hole that the trojan originally used has been closed.
So, fire up Software Update (in the Apple menu) and rest easy. Flashback has been, once again, defeated. As of yesterday, a study done by Symantec showed that the number of infected Macs was down from 600,000 to under 270,000. That was before Apple released this update. With Apple's latest update, that number will be reduced closer to zero (it would be zero if everyone fully updated their Macs). Time to forget all about this Flashback thing, right?

Previously, the Flashback Trojan on Mac wasn't much to worry about. It didn't looks like the Flash installer for Mac OS, and it required users to enter their password for it to install. However, it just became a larger concern. Using a security problem in Java, the malware can now install itself without the user downloading or installing it themselves. All it needs is the user to visit a specific website. We can now officially consider this a security threat.

With every new operating system, older hardware becomes obsolete. With Macs, it's easier to tell what hardware will no longer run the latest operating system. In the case of Mountain Lion, it's any Mac using Intel's old GMA 950 or X3100. It's believed that the inclusion of Airplay mirroring is the cause of this, although since Apple has yet to reveal all the features of the OS, so we can't be certain.

AirParrot is a new application that does just that. It's incredibly easy to use, and even on full quality has very few issues streaming video. Even full screen streaming content shows up well on the big screen.

Microsoft recently opened another one of their Microsoft Stores. If you're unaware, Microsoft Stores are essentially Apple Store clones. Microsoft tries to open them up near Apple stores, trying to say "look, we can be hip too!". Unfortunately, Microsoft is anything but cool.
They hired a DJ for their latest Microsoft Store opening. Can you guess what kind of computer he uses? Above, you can clearly see that the laptop is a MacBook Pro. Microsoft made the DJ cover up the logo with a Microsoft sticker, but you can still see the Apple logo through the sticker.
Microsoft even has trouble pretending to be cool. Maybe they should just work on making their operating system
less awkward and create their own style, rather than continually
copying Apple.

For some odd reason, this malware was updated. They just won't let it lie down and die. The latest version of the malware can actually disable automatic updating of the built in Mac OS anti-malware software. You could make sure it updates manually though.
Fortunately, it's incredibly easy to avoid this trojan. If your flash installer looks like the photo above, and you downloaded it directly from Adobe, then install it. If it looks like the screenshot below, you've got a trojan on your hands, and you should delete it immediately. You're safe, it still requires you to download, install it, and give it your password, so you're still relatively safe.

Between the third quarter last year and this the third quarter this year, Mac sales grew by 21.5%. Those sales figures don't even include the iPad, the most popular tablet.
The rest of the industry only grew by 1.1%. It's clear that adoption of Apple products is increasing over time. Also, Acer, by far, saw the worst sales of all, with their sales dropping by over 25%. Bad time to own Acer stock, great time to own Apple stock.

Quicklook is an amazing feature of Mac OS. Highlight an item, and press the space bar to get a peek at the file. Whether it's a document, or an image, you can see the contents without having to open the program associated with it. With Mac OS Lion, you can use Quicklook right from a Stack on your Dock. If you're using Fan or Grid view, you can use Quicklook in a very similar way you would for any other file. Just hover your mouse over it, and press space. It's that easy. Just another one of those 250+ features that have been added to Lion.

Previously, you had to use a Terminal command, or an app like
Secrets to add text to your lock screen. However, with Lion, Apple has made this even easier. Simply go into System Preferences, choose Security & Privacy, and in the General tab, type a message in the box. It's that easy.
Then, when your screen is locked, it will display the text you've typed in. It's an easy and quick way to deter thieves, or get your Mac back if it's been lost or stolen.

Another annoyance to worry about for a few days: there's a new trojan out for Macs. Of course, issues like these are patched by Apple relatively quickly, and they don't infect many people. Still, be careful until Apple releases an update to fix it.
The trojan gets in through a special PDF, so only open PDF files if you're certain of their origin. If you're sent a random pdf file, and you don't know what it is, or who it's from, don't open it.
More malware delivered through an Adobe product, what a shocker. Just be safe over the next few days, and don't open any files you're suspicious of. Also, if you're using antivirus, make sure it's updated, and get ready for an update from Apple.

Another day, another study putting Apple at the top for customer satisfaction. This one comes from the American Customer Satisfaction Index, and it's the 8th year in a row they've received the top spot.
Apple scored an 87 out of 100, the closest competitor scored 9 points less. For you students, that's an entire letter grade. The difference between having a fun weekend, and being grounded. Apple improved by one point since last year.

This was a small study, only 158 students were surveyed. Still, out of those new 158 college students, 60% of them had purchased a Mac instead of a PC. The small size of the study raises some doubt about the validity of this study. Still, it does follow
other studies that show Macs have become very popular among college students.

With iOS and Lion, Apple made a step towards a new user interface design: monochromatic icons. The low color, high contrast icons are easy to see, and look fresh and clean. Soneone at Microsoft must have liked the idea too, because the've decided to copy Apple (again) and do the same thing.
They even went so far as to make the settings shortcut a gear, like the one that has been in Mac OS and iOS for years. After seeing the
horrible design choice for the Explorer, one has to wonder, does Microsoft have a single create employee?

GeekTool has been around on Mac OS for some time now, but now, it's available on the Mac App Store. It allows you to customize your desktop with Geeklets. These little Geeklets sit on your desktop. They're unobtrusive and sit in the background. There are three types of Geeklet: File view, Image, and Shell Script. File Geeklets allow you to monitor the contents of a file. It's great if you like to keep an eye on your logs.
The image is pretty straightforward. It shows an image on your desktop. It might not seem immediately useful, but it can be used for clocks, calendars, or, in the screenshot below, a layered desktop.
Finally, there's the big one: shell scripts. It's what allows you to create calendars, weather data, clocks, and more. If you can't create a script yourself, fear not, there are plenty you can download from
here. If you have some programming knowledge, it's really not too hard to start modifying downloaded Geeklets, and eventually creating your own.
There's a small learning curve, but with just a little work, you can customize your desktop quite easily. My desktop was created with a nice wallpaper (the 2012 Focus ST),
Nocturne to create a black menubar,
Dock Library and
Leopard Docks to use a dark dock, and two Geeklets that I modified slightly. The originals can be found on the site I linked to above. You can download GeekTool in the Mac App Store

Lion is great, the new features are incredibly useful. But, to some people, a few of the new changes are more annoyances than fun new features. Among them, are the hidden scroll bars, animations, hidden folders, autocorrect, and much more. The app Lion Tweaks allows users to edit these features, some of which can't be edited throughout the system.

here. Although if you're only problem with Lion is the autocorrect, you can actually turn this off from the Language and Text pane of System preferences, from the Text tab.

It doesn't take Apple long to patch a security hole. If you'll remember, a
new trojan was released for Mac OS on the 6th, which disguised itself as the Adobe Flash installer to trick users into installing the malware. Apple was quick to stomp this one out, because as of last Friday, Macs with the auto-updating save downloads list are immune, as long as you haven't disabled the feature. It's enabled by default in the general security preferences.
If you manage to download this malware, your Mac will warn you that you've downloaded known malware before you have a chance to install it.

If you frequently use the system wide zoom feature in Mac OS (Ctrl+Scroll), you may be a bit disappointed to find that it has been disabled in Lion. This is because applications such as Safari now feature more intuitive zooming using the pinch gesture. However, this won't work for all applications, and it doesn't zoom the full screen. If you have vision issues, or frequently show of a section of your screen to others, this could be a problem.
But, fear not, it's actuality very easy to add the functionality back into Lion. How to, along with screen shots below.

Right on the heels of the news of MacDefender company has been taken down by the authorities, a new piece of Mac Malware has been revealed. The malware pretends to be Adobe Flash, and, once installed, will replace google.com with the attacker's own website. The malware is apparently set up to deliver pop-up ads, but it appears as though this functionality is not operational yet.

Expect Apple to block this quickly, as it did with the multiple versions of the MacDefender malware. Still, until the malware has been blocked, you can prevent it from infecting you by only installing Adobe Flash from Adobe's website. Why would you trust Adobe software downloaded from anywhere else anyway? Like MacDefender, this requires the user to not only download it, but also install it. As long as you only install Flash from Adobe, you'll be fine.
