Verizon customers sure are happy to finally have a new iPhone. Verizon sold 4.3 million iPhones during the fourth quarter of 2011. Overall, they sold 7.7 million smartphones. That's nearly 56%.
But the sales figures for AT&T iPhones were even better. A whopping 81% of all smartphones sold on AT&T were iPhones. Out of 9.4 million smartphones sold, 7.6 million were iPhones.
If the iPhone retains this popularity, expect the iPhone to be the dominant smartphone in no time.

AT&T has dropped out of the T-Mobile deal, citing pressure from federal regulation committees. Although there won't be a merger, they did come to an agreement involving roaming, although the details of that agreement haven't been made pubic. Could that deal have been the cause of iPhone owners on T-Mobile finally getting 3G? It's unknown.
One thing is certain. Thanks to a deal AT&T had with T-Mobile, by backing out of the merger, they owe T-Mobile 4 billion dollars. Ouch.

Sprint offers an "Unlimited Everything" plan for $99. Similar plans on AT&T or Verizon cost more, or don't come with unlimited data. But, do you get what you pay for on Sprint?

NTT DoCoMo is Japan's largest mobile service provider. Despite that, Apple refuses to accept their terms, and that's a great thing.
DoCoMo wants to be allowed to preload software on the iPhone. Preloaded software like this is more commonly referred to as "bloatware" or "junkware". It's a plague on Windows PCs and Android phones alike. I recently went through the daunting task of teaching my father how to download an app from the Android Marketplace. I couldn't help but notice the immense amount of bloatware his Droid 3 came with.
Combine an overly complicated interface, problems downloading the app from the marketplace (I ended up sending him a link to the app from my iPhone), and the pages of bloatware, I couldn't believe he didn't throw the phone out then and there. I think the fact that it's his work phone stopped him.

The iPhone 4S is the best selling smartphone on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. It's not surprising that the latest version of the most popular smartphone with the highest customer satisfaction is also the best selling smartphone on all carriers.
It's still an incredible feat, as the iPhone 4S has only been available for less than a month. The iPhone 4 is still incredibly popular as well, sitting in the top 3 for each carrier. So, have you gotten your iPhone yet?

Earlier today, Apple began sending out invites to the iPhone event on
October 4th. However, due to vacation blackouts around October 14th for Apple, AT&T, and even Sprint, it's assumed that this would be the actual release date. In addition, numerous sources have claimed that October 14th would be the date for the US release of the next generation iPhone.

Two leaks out from T-Mobile today. One's bad news for customers, the other is good news.
Which would you like first? (Too bad, I'm telling you the bad news first).
So, the bad news is, T--Mobile won't be getting the iPhone 5 this year. Of course, there's always next year, but it's now less likely. T-Mobile is still in the process of being bought by AT&T, and they're confident the deal will go through. Since AT&T already has the iPhone, why should Apple put additional effort in creating a new model specifically for a company that will be bought up soon?
But, that leads me to the good news. Previously, T-Mobile customers were worried they wouldn't be able to keep their rate plans after the merger. AT&T has a better network, but their customers pay more for it. But, you don't have to worry about that, thanks to a leak from an internal memo. Current T-Mobile customers will be allowed to keep their rate plans, even if their contract expires, and they continue to use the service on a monthly basis. That's a really great deal, and is sure to keep T-Mobile customers very happy. So, if you're on T-Mobile, you now have two reasons to hope the buyout goes through successfully: better coverage for the same price, and the iPhone 5.

If you were looking forward to T-Mobile being bought out by AT&T to improve the network, I've got bad news for you. The US government has now filed a lawsuit against AT&T over the acquisition. An attorney with the department of justice said that "AT&T’s elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low-priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market".
It's true, a low cost option would be eliminated. Sprint has detailed ways that AT&T could improve their network without buying T-Mobile. Also, T-Mobile customers would have access to a better network, but there was no word on whether or not their rates would increase.
It's looking like the deal may fall through. Is this good for consumers, or did Sprint's lobbying really work? Either way, it looks as though T-Mobile will remain an option for consumers. It may have worse coverage, but it is also cheaper than plans on AT&T or Verizon. Perhaps their customers are comfortable exchanging coverage for pricing. To many, a lower cell phone bill is more important than fast data speeds and great coverage, which is why options like T-Mobile are necessary.

According to an anonymous (and apparently, nervous) tipster, AT&T has been busy installing LTE equipment in Apple stores. This tipster also noted that Apple stores are hiring more staff than they usually do at this time. Originally, this story came with a nice little picture of the equipment in question. However, at the request of the tipster, the photo has been removed. You'll just have to take my word for this one, there was a picture, and it was magnificent
(not really).
The tipster became just a bit nervous after his photo started going around on various blogs. After all, revealing company secrets is enough to get you canned, let alone revealing secrets at one of the most secretive tech companies in the industry. He'd lose his job, and have a very hard time finding another. So I suppose he can't be blamed for requesting it's removal, it's completely understandable.

AT&T is rushing their employees to finish training so they're ready for a big launch in September, the launch of the iPhone 5. Whether or not they're basing this on speculation or they've received word from Apple has not been said. Current rumors place the release of a number of iOS devices, as well as iOS 5 this fall, and so far, September has been the expected date. The fifth generation of the iPhone is expected to be a very popular phone, with it's launch being simultaneously on AT&T and Verizon, and possibly T-Mobile and Sprint as well.

In a recent report by Localytics, a mobile research group, it was revealed that Verizon iPhones account for 32% of all iPhones. This shows huge growth for the Verizon iPhone, despite getting the iPhone 4 much later than AT&T. The carrier will benefit from the launch of the iPhone 5, which is expected to be launched on AT&T and Verizon simultaneously. The iPhone 5 should also be in higher demand than the iPhone 4 was for Verizon, as the iPhone 4 was launched mid cycle, and many people decided to hold out for the next iPhone.
The iPhone has proven to be very profitable for both carriers. Though only rumors, Sprint and Tmobile may be getting the iPhone in the near future as well.

Verizon may be planning on discounting the iPhone 4 by $50 prior to the release of the iPhone 5. Doing so would give them an edge over AT&T, and offer incentive for people who are thinking about waiting for the iPhone 5.
Both AT&T and Verizon may offer the iPhone 4 at a discounted price after the release of the iPhone 5, so it's not surprising that Verizon is considering discounting it ahead of time.

Mobile carriers advertising "4G" aren't always being honest. There's LTE, WiMax, and HSPA+, and they're all classified as "4G". How is a consumer supposed to decide which is best? They're all faster than 3G, but which technology is truly the fastest?
When Tmobile's advertising the "largest 4G network", they're really talking about HSPA+, the slowest form of 4G. It's been around since 2008, and while it is faster than normal 3G, it's nothing to write home about. Tmobile can claim a large 4G network, but what they don't mention is that it's much slower than any other form of 4G.
That's why a bill has been created to try to change this. It would force carriers to be honest about the speed of their 4G networks, allowing customers to make direct comparisons.
The bill, called the Next Generation Wireless Disclosure Act, is new, and it's still in the House. If approved, however, carriers would still be able to claim they have a 4G network, but they'd also have to mention the speed of their network.
Will carriers block this through extensive lobbying? Only time will tell, but it could become a lot easier to compare networks in the near future.
