New Bill Clarifies "4G"

Mobile carriers advertising "4G" aren't always being honest. There's LTE, WiMax, and HSPA+, and they're all classified as "4G". How is a consumer supposed to decide which is best? They're all faster than 3G, but which technology is truly the fastest?

When Tmobile's advertising the "largest 4G network", they're really talking about HSPA+, the slowest form of 4G. It's been around since 2008, and while it is faster than normal 3G, it's nothing to write home about. Tmobile can claim a large 4G network, but what they don't mention is that it's much slower than any other form of 4G.

That's why a bill has been created to try to change this. It would force carriers to be honest about the speed of their 4G networks, allowing customers to make direct comparisons.
The bill, called the Next Generation Wireless Disclosure Act, is new, and it's still in the House. If approved, however, carriers would still be able to claim they have a 4G network, but they'd also have to mention the speed of their network.

Will carriers block this through extensive lobbying? Only time will tell, but it could become a lot easier to compare networks in the near future.

Best iPod for Blind People

In what can only be described as a move to shut The Onion up, Apple just satirized themselves by creating the "Stupidest iPod ever." Somehow, most of us got over the lack of a screen when the first Shuffle came out, but two generations later and now there aren't any controls on the device either. What we're left with is a bland piece of metal with a clip. 

The controls have been moved to the headphones, which pretty much means you're forced to wear those pretty white buds. But who cares about controls, this baby is smaller than a AA battery!

To somehow compensate for the lack of a screen, Apple has added a text-to-speech feature called "VoiceOver". It'll provide the names of your songs and artists, as well as your playlist names. Thus making this the "Best iPod for Blind People" too. 

Can you tell I'm disappointed with the Shuffle 3G? It is a complete joke. A half-assed product that even Apple seems ashamed of, since it was just quietly announced this morning. Not only does it look plain, locking you into one set of headphones is just as bad as having a full library of DRM'd songs to me. 

The Shuffle 2g was nearly perfect. It was just the right size to clip-on your shirt, or jeans, it came in a variety of colors, and had easy to use controls. Why would any company take a step backwards from that?
The Shuffle 3G comes in silver, or black with a stainless steel clip, has support for MP3, AAC, and gets about 10 hours of battery life. The 4GB model is available today for 79$.

Skype for iPhone

It's finally here, and even a few minutes early. Skype for iPhone is now available in the US iTunes store, free of charge. We've heard great thing from the folks in Japan who've been fiddling with it for the last twelve hours, and so far it's sounding pretty good for us, too, with only minor hiccups. Not sure if it's a glitch, but despite what we heard earlier, we seem to be able to dial out while on 3G and not over Wi-Fi (at least running OS 3.0 beta). Update 1

We're getting reports the app is crashing for jailbroken iPhones — and possibly non-jailbroken ones as well. We just got our first denial when dialing out over 3G via a popup notification, but it only happened once and we were back to old habits one call later. We did experience a brief period where no sound was coming through, but that might have something to do with using OS 3.0 and was remedied by restarting the phone.

Update 2 

So far, it looks like dialing over 3G's only working for those with OS 3.0 beta, but unfortunately all of us in that situation are now suffering from frequent crashes and loss of audio. Things seem to be going smoothly for those running the latest non-beta firmware, but the calls only work over Wi-Fi. That said, when using the app as intended (non-beta firmware over Wi-Fi), audio quality was surprisingly good, far better than any third party apps we've used.

While most of the Apple product are nice in white color scheme, the white iPhone 3G only get the sexy part on its back cover. When you are looking at the white iPhone 3G from the front, it actually looks like the black iPhone 3G. 

Turning to the back view gives you a nice white shiny cover, but from the side view it is just weird.

The back of the 3G iPhone looks ceramic or fiberglass or plastic that they made to look like ceramic or fiber glass. 

The camera on the top left, though, looks weirdly located. Ca one actually point and shoot with that thing right there? 

Of course, with this 3G version is also the iPhone SDK adding new software to the iPhone via the App Store.
