2Q12 panel price likely to increase, off-season inventory stocking expected

Diposting oleh fawaid on Selasa, 03 April 2012

TAIWAN: According to the Worldwide Large-sized Panel Sufficiency Analysis from WitsView, TrendForce’s display research division, the global economy recovered slowly after being hit by 2008 financial crisis, followed by severe economic problems including inflation, European debt crisis, Japan 311 earthquake, and China’s economic growth slowdown, causing a weak end-market demand to put panel industry in a long-term oversupply condition.

Display industry’s continuous inventory adjustment in the past two years has enabled the overall inventory to return to a healthy level when entering 1Q12, while downstream clients start their new-model launches and inventory restocking.

WitsView indicated that the panel makers who intend to leave the loss behind have been aggressively targeting cost optimization by adopting new manufacturing process and fresh products since 2012. As for manufacturing process, new adoptions including 0.4 mm/0.5mm thin glass substrate, CF on Array, and Gate on Array, while new product development including direct type LED TV models, 29”, 36.5”, 39” and 50” new-sized products, and 3 mm Ultra Slim NB Module, both of which were developed to create actual benefit by increasing added values and lowering cost simultaneously.

Boyce Fan, WitsView research manager, indicates that due to panel makers’ aggressive efforts on production conversion, some capacity has been transferred to pre-production models, coupled with lower-than-expected yield rate at the early stage of adopting new manufacturing process, leading to a profound gap between glass input and output volumes. As a result, as demand rebounded in February to March, tight supplies might more or less enhance the panel price uptrend.

WitsView believes that with optimized component cost, panel makers are projected to continuously increase the utilization rate and further strengthen cost optimization in response to rebounded demand and prone-to-increase panel price, causing the global large-sized panel capacity utilization rate to climb to 81 percent in 2Q12 from 73 percent in the earlier quarter. However, once the downstream vendors notice the changes occurring in terms of both supply volume and prices, pushing them to stock their inventory in advance in 2Q12, it is likely that 3Q12 would become yet another peak season with weak demand due to higher inventory levels.Source: WitsView, Taiwan.

Mac Trojan can now Install Itself

Diposting oleh fawaid on Senin, 02 April 2012

Previously, the Flashback Trojan on Mac wasn't much to worry about. It didn't looks like the Flash installer for Mac OS, and it required users to enter their password for it to install. However, it just became a larger concern. Using a security problem in Java, the malware can now install itself without the user downloading or installing it themselves. All it needs is the user to visit a specific website. We can now officially consider this a security threat.

Apple has Worked on a Game Controller for iOS

Diposting oleh fawaid

When Apple revealed the new iPad, they said the retina display, ram upgrade, and A5X processor would put iPad gaming on par with game consoles. Though there are games out that take advantage of the increase in power and graphics capabilities of the new iPad, none have really pushed it to the limit yet, so these claims have not been verified... yet.

Still, Apple could be preparing for iOS to take over serious gaming, as well as mobile gaming. One thing that may sweeten the deal would be a controller. According to a source at Anandtech claims that they know Apple has been working on an official controller for iOS. A patent application from 2008 certainly proves that Apple has at least thought about such a device. Whether or not the report is true, or if Apple would actually release a device is uncertain. Apple often works on projects that end up going unreleased, so even if they are working on a controller, there's no guarantee it would be released.

There have been 3rd party controllers for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch in the past. However, while they work well, none have gotten enough developer support to become really popular. Developers have a hard time committing to a 3rd party controller, as they don't know if people will buy them, or if the support for the controller will worth their time to add. But, if Apple were to release a controller, it would get more support from developers, and be a more attractive option for consumers. Then there are some that say the touch screen is all any iOS device needs for games, and this seems to be the kind of stance Apple would take as well.

New iPad Satisfaction at Record High

Diposting oleh fawaid

The new iPad has been immensely popular, with launch weekend sales over 3 million units. And, as it turns out, a record 98% of new iPad users are satisfied with the new iPad. A study by ChangeWave surveyed 200 new iPad users. Of those surveyed, 82% said they were "very satisfied" with the new iPad, while 16% said they were "somewhat satisfied". Only 2% of users said they were "somewhat unsatisfied" and no one said they were completely unsatisfied with the Apple's latest tablet. Not a single person has been completely unsatisfied with the device. Personally, my response would have been thrown into the "very satisfied" category, but only after they translated my response of "I f*%#^!% love this thing".

All those "issues" with heat or wifi? Looks like they weren't really issues at all. What a surprise.

Samsung widens lead in US LCD-TV shipment with record-high market share in Q4

Diposting oleh fawaid

EL SEGUNDO, USA: Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, in the fourth quarter of 2011, solidified its leadership of the US liquid-crystal display (LCD) market, as its share of unit shipments reached a record high, according to the IHS iSuppli Television Systems Service.

During the final three months of 2011, Samsung accounted for nearly one-quarter of US LCD TV shipments, at 23.6 percent, as shown in the figure attached. This represented the largest share of the market ever posted by Samsung on a quarterly basis, and allowed the South Korean electronics giant to pad its lead over No.2 brand VIZIO Inc. of Irvine, Calif.

“Samsung triumphed in the price war that raged in the US LCD market in the fourth quarter of 2011,” said Tom Morrod, senior analyst and head of TV Technology for IHS. “The company was able to offer a range of price-competitive sets with a rich choice of features that US consumers wanted. This allowed the company to outperform the competition during the all-important holiday selling season.”

In an example of how Samsung was able to capitalize on its broad range of products, the company in the fourth quarter sold two LCD TV models that were identical in every way, except that one integrated the older cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlighting—while the other employed the newer and more expensive light-emitting diode (LED) technology. This gave consumers a clear choice of features and price points.

Samsung in the fourth quarter extended its market-share lead over US-based VIZIO to 8.2 percentage points, up from 6.2 points in the third quarter. Just a year earlier, in the fourth quarter of 2010, the companies’ positions were reversed, with VIZIO leading Samsung by 7.2 points. Samsung may be positioned to further expand its lead over VIZIO in 2012 because of another factor separate from LCD-TV market dynamics.

“The recent Free Trade Agreement between the United States and South Korea will remove tariffs imposed on Korean firms selling TVs in America,” Morrod said. “Because of this accord, Samsung and fellow South Korean brand LG Electronics are poised to increase their shipments in the United States this year.”

LCD-TV shipments spike in Q4
The US LCD TV market shipments experienced strong sequential growth in the fourth quarter of 2011, rising by 30.7 percent compared to the third quarter.

Lower-than-expected demand and uncertainty about the US economic recovery had caused LCD shipments to fall going into the second quarter. However, aggressive pricing helped boost sales at the end of the year—the time when holiday sales typically peak. Overall average LCD TV prices in the fourth quarter fell to about $1,032, a $16 drop from the third quarter.

The strong fourth-quarter increase helped the US LCD-TV market to eke out a small increase in 2011, with shipments rising to 33.4 million units for the year, up 0.4 percent from 33.2 million in 2010.
