Lion was released this week, and with it came many new security features, making it the most secure version of Mac OS X ever. However, there's one vulnerability that has gone unnoticed for quite some time. The battery within MacBooks have a microprocessor and firmware. Security researcher Charlie Miller found a method of accessing these batteries, as they all use the same default password. Apple could fix this by randomizing passwords, but as news of this vulnerability were only just released, Apple has yet to comment.
With access to the battery, an attacker could theoretically place malware on it that would be next to impossible for the user to remove, they could cause the battery to malfunction, and even possibly overheat.
Now, he's only found that all the batteries use the same password. None of these attacks have been tried, and they may not even be possible. But if they are, be sure to install the next update you see from Apple concerning battery security.
