Google's homepage hasn't seen a refresh in quite a while. Sure, they change the doodle (the Google logo) on special occasions, but no big changes. In fact, the last big change allowed users to set their own background image for the site, which, while it created interesting possibilities, wasn't all that popular. With most people using a search bar on their browser to perform web searches, why bother with the design of your search page?
Google updated the look of the website today, in preparation for their new Google+ social sharing feature, which Google claims will make it easy to share results, and even video chat with a group of friends. The update includes a new links bar at the top, with a red highlight for the service you're currently using. Search results will include this new look as well.
While it isn't a big change, it doesn't look bad, and it should pave the way for Google+.
