Today, Apple sent out the above invites to a number of tech blogs and news organizations. On the 7th of March, Apple will be revealing the iPad 3. The invite also reveals a bit more (as they often do). From it, we can see that the resolution of the screen is higher than that of the iPad 2. We can also see that it's missing the only button that was on the front of any iOS device. There's no home button. And that's not just the angle, because the arrangement of the icons, it's obvious that this iPad is being used in portrait mode.
iOS devices have been rumored to be losing the home button for some time. If you didn't notice, Apple's been on a warpath against buttons. Mice and trackpads are touch sensitive, and gestures or multitouch has replaced physical buttons. And, while I've loved every solution I've used in the past, I'm not 100% certain about using it on the iPad. If the bezel is touch sensitive, what will users hold?
I'm sure Apple wouldn't get rid of the home button unless they found a better replacement, and I'm looking forward to seeing the all new iPad next week.
