Thank you, Megan, for allowing me to share my Nap Mat Cover Tutorial! I was planning on doing a nap mat until the teacher requested I make a cover instead--a nap mat plus the nap mat roll takes up precious space in the classroom! As a former teacher I completely understand so here we go:
MaterialsFlannel 1 yard
Cotton Fabric 1 3/8 yard
Binding Strips about two packages or handmade (optional)
Velcro 3/4" wide, 12" strip
Directions
Pre-wash/pre-shrink your fabrics. I decided to add binding around the flannel for an extra touch since I went with a solid blanket. You only need to add the binding to three sides; the two long sides and one shorter side (the other will be sewn into the cover). If you do not add binding be sure to fold down the raw edges and sew.
A decorative zigzag stitch is not necessary but fun.
Pin the side without the binding strip to one long side of the main fabric about 4" from the bottom. Baste in place. Fold the other long side over. The flannel blanket will be sandwiched between the main fabric with their Right Sides Together. Sew down the side and the bottom (leave the top open!).Turn down the opening 1/4", press, and fold down about 1". Press. Sew along the edge. I sewed along the folded/top edge because I thought it looked better.
Sew the Velcro hook and loop tape to the opening on the inside of the cover; centered.
Slip the nap mat inside and close.
You have one happy little toddler.
