Can you use an iPhone 4 or 4S without a case?

Since I got my iPhone 4 last year, it's had a case on it. In fact, I even got my bumper from Apple before the iPhone made it to my doorstep. But, I quickly discovered a problem with Apple's Bumper: it caused scuffs on the metal band around the iPhone. I had to find a soft case then, one that could protect it better, not cause scuffs, and protect it from impacts. I found one with a neat design, however it had issues. The rubber surface collected dirt, and the controls were hard to access, as the rubber was too thick around the iPhone's buttons.

Finally, I found the Incipio NGP iPhone 4 case. Great case. Durable, clean looking, easy to use, good protection, and not bad looking. Not as good looking as the iPhone 4 by itself, but not to bad.

But yesterday, I decided to begin a little test. Can I comfortably use an iPhone 4, without a case? I had three main mental blocks. The first is a case of durability. Is the glass tough enough to survive a fall? The second is my obsessive need to keep such a beautiful device free of my grubby fingerprints. Finally, is the phone comfortable to use without an easy to grip case?
