Rumors have been floating around that Apple may be pulling the plug on the Mac Pro. The universal opinion? This would be incredibly foolish. It's bad enough that Apple discontinued the XServe, but getting rid of the Mac Pro would completely alienate professionals.
The iMac is powerful, but not as powerful as the Mac Pro, which is available with two 6 core processors, up to 64GB of ram, and terabytes of storage, as well as powerful graphics, a RAID card, and tons of expandability. The iMac couldn't compete with that for years, if ever.
That's why the Mac Pro is popular among professionals. If you have to deal with processor intensive tasks, huge files, animations, or videos processing, you want a very fast computer. The computer animation industry runs on Mac Pros. If you need a fast Mac, you get a Mac Pro, it's that simple.
Here's to hoping Apple doesn't ruin their reputation with professionals completely. The Mac Mini isn't a good enough replacement for the XServe, and the iMac isn't a powerful enough replacement for the Mac Pro. Don't read that the wrong way, the Mac Mini Server is great for consumers and small businesses, but it's not as useful in a large scale enterprise environment. And the iMac? It's great for most people. It's powerful, has great graphics, and great for everyday use and professional use. But for larger companies, the extra power of the Mac Pro is a must.
