When he's not defending the world from global warming and Manbearpig, Al Gore is a board member at Apple. So when a well known Apple employee comes out and says something like "Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month", people tend to take notice. I'll also point out that no, that's not a typo, he did pluralize "iPhone". Could he mean there are different models in the works, different colors, or different storage capacities? Hard to guess, as he didn't say anything else on the matter.
This is close on the heels of this morning's announcement from AllThingsD, claiming they know the iPhone-focused event will be on October 4th, and will be presented by Tim Cook. Steve Jobs may make an appearance, but according to AllThingsD, it's Tim Cook, Apple's new CEO, who will be running the show.
Things are heating up. If October 4th is the date for the event, invites would be heading out next week. The iPhone models could be released in as little as a week after the announcement, however will most likely be later in the month.
