The invitation actually is quite clever. The calendar icon is the date, the clock has the time, and the map has the location (1 Infinite Loop, Apple's headquarters in Cupertino).
As for the phone icon? There's only one new notification which could this mean there's only one new iPhone this year. I think Apple would have been clever and made the badge have a '2' on it if they were releasing two new phones, but perhaps I'm reading too much into this.
Either way, this is official now, Apple will announce the next iPhone on October 4th.
